Roper question

Does a roper attempt to drain strength every round that it has a tentacle in contact with you or does it only drain on the round it hits you with a tentacle?

In other words, does it continue to drain strength once it has a hold of you and is dragging you towards its maw?

Also, if you sever an attached tentacle can the roper make another attack with it the next round (you just cut off a bit) or is that tentacle useless for the rest of combat?

From the SRD, Monsters (R)
Weakness (Ex): A roper’s strands can sap an opponent’s strength. Anyone caught by a strand must succeed at a Fortitude save (DC 18) or take 2d8 points of temporary Strength damage.

If you have not escaped on the previous round, you are still 'caught'. I'd rule that that it happened every round. Otherwise it is hardly a CR 10 creature.

We actually beat one with a party of three 4th level characters (2 melee, 1 ranged, 0 spellcasters) and a novice DM who did not know how to pull punches. We did have one 0 Str character and the primary warrior-type (actually the half-orc cleric) had a 4 Str and almost drowned in a nearby stream since he was over-encumbered.

It drains strength once per strand per hit.

It's not useless. Shorter perhaps.
