You could just run a D&D world in which creatures were granted "Awakening"...and the magic turned out to be inheritable or where Awakened educated Elders passed along their gift via a ritual in which Awaken is cast upon worthy younglings.

This Type of campaign is exactly what I wrote The Noble Wild for. You are animals, but you are the "nobility" of the animal kingdom, with heightened intelligence and the capacity for speech and language. You can play any way you like: All animals, like The Lion King, mixed animals and humanoids like Lord of the Rings (remember Shadofax?), or animals hiding from humans like The Secret of Nimh.

There's new prestige classes, new feats, a new basic class, the Greater Familiar, and over 70 playable character species, from mouse to elephant.

I would love to hear what people think of it!

The now-defunct Guardians of Order had Big Ears, Small Mouse, but it requires the first edition of Big Eyes Small Mouth which is out-of-print.

It shouldn't be that hard to use it with BESM 2nd/2nd Revised.

If you don't mind pdf, you can always buy all the versions of BESM here:

2nd: http://enworld.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=365&it=1&filters=0_0_10119
3rd: http://enworld.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=24482&it=1&filters=0_0_10119

Newer editions don't necessarily mean "better". It's more a matter of what you're looking for. 1st ed was a fairly rules-light approach and not bad. 2nd Ed added a _lot_ of stuff, and lost fans because of it, while gaining others. It's probably the best known version. 3rd Ed has some pretty vocal fans, but overall I'm not impressed with what I've seen. The Tri-Stat system was already complicated enough, and they tried to revise it and added even more stuff to it. Only a limited number of 3E books were printed and I've no idea where you could get one now.

And from what I've seen you could probably use it with OVA (Wise Turtle Publishing) with a bit of jiggering as well. OVA is for sale here: here:http://enworld.rpgnow.com/product_i...18967&it=1&filters=0_0_0&manufacturers_id=639

Working on it
I still need to play Bunnies and Burrows (or Big Ears Small Mouse) sometime. I know a guy who's working on a game about playing dogs. I've seen the character sheet, it looks pretty neat.

Also, a guy named Matt Weber was going to run a game called "Watership Dune," (what a pun!!) using Burning Wheel/Burning Sands: Jihad at Dreamation a few months ago, but I think it fell through.

I really don't like PDF books and am old school and I like the feel of bind books in my hand rather loose pages.
Same here, but I buy quite a few PDFs. Most of them, I just print out, in part or in full. You can then have them bound, pretty cheaply. Or you can just have someone print and bind them for you, again at a fairly low cost.

And then, some publishers offer PoD (print on demand) at, for example, www.lulu.com. EN Publishing in one such, I believe. But there are more and more each year.

But hey, if you're simply not into PDFs at all, regardless, then cool. Doesn't bother me either way. :)

Well, it bothers me a little ;)

Seriously though, I prefer hardcopy as well, but the publisher decided not to go through the cost of a print run for a 3.5 ruleset when 4th ed. is right around the corner. We'll put out a hard copy for 4th ed. in January, but till then, don't let an aversion to the format make you miss what I feel is a very special book. It is the most ambitious thing I've ever done.

But if you don't, you don't... I'll just cry myself to sleep.
