Scotley's 4e Swashbuckler

Tabitha curses as the mechanism repels her.

"Blast...it's slippery. Air's moist down here. And there's lichens or something. Lemme have another go."

She squints and leans closer, working her little picks and torsion bar at the slick, shielded springs that hold the bear trap shut.

(Assuming there's no exploding fireball or anything :) Ah! 30! http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4027473/)

"Come on, fela, I was only funnin' ya. Ya can trust us, for reals. What was ya really up to down here? ;) Manous gives the little fellow a conspiratorial wink. Manous's companions do not recall the paladin speaking like this before around them.

The Gnome seems relieved, but perhaps not quite ready to trust completely. "Let's just say that sometimes I prefer to travel where prying eyes can't see my movements. No doubt a similar motive puts you hear, for few would hazard this place without such a reason. There is little enough of value to bring folk exploring in such numbers."

"Perhaps, if we can free you, you'd be willing to show us the way out of these caverns?"

"Oh indeed, it is my intention to depart for fairer lands forthwith. If you can keep up with my little legs I shall lead you out." At about that moment Tabitha's skill coaxes the rusted mechanism open and the Gnome slips free. He takes an experimental step or two and assures himself that no serious harm was rendered him by the trap. "You have done me a great boon good lady and I am at your service."

Manous Artouche, Human (Protecting) Paladin 4

"Yer kin repays us by leading us straight back out of here. That will go a long way towards settlin' the score 'twixt us, anyways. Who does yer be knowin' back topside? Anyone we can get a message to?"

OOC: Manous has a no way to get a message to anyone, but he figures that this Gnome is a thief and a criminal, so he's trying to glean some intelligence from him to use for later on down the road. Manous feels bad about his prevarication, but rationalizes that it is in the service of Good if he is able to learn aught that helps the battle against crime and evil. I don't foresee Manous doing this much after this, if ever, but he is exploring whether the 'tools' of the enemy can be used against him with any effectiveness. He will likely decide that this is a distasteful practice and best left to true ne'er-do-wells.

[sblock=Background]
Manous is a "Barbarian Indian" type who was born in the recently discovered "America," but was brought back to "France" as a very small boy (about 12/13?) by a sea captain as an oddity to be widely displayed and poked and prodded by various folks. Then said waif was seen by a Duchess and her heart went out to the poor lad, so she adopted him and had him trained/schooled by the best Masters in the land, and given very much religious instruction in the 'accepted' faith. Ultimately, young Manous became a Paladin, but he still looks very unusual, having been copiously tattooed by his people and subjected to the body modifications of his tribe. I'm thinking Manous's entire body is tattooed with geometric patterns and star charts, his earlobes have been greatly pierced with objects of ever-increasing size during his early childhood, so he has great flapping "rings" of flesh hanging from his ears. Manous Artouche also has a row of "earrings" around his navel (navel rings?) (but he keeps that covered most of the time), and he also has a "bone in his nose." (Not a real bone, but a ring of brass much like a bull.)

So Manous looks like a total freak, except when he is shrouded in his Paladin's armor, at which time he is indistinguishable from any other knight of the realm, but he is always unswervingly loyal to his benefactor the Duchess, and he is as faithful to his new religion as anyone in "France." Now, the Duchess is on the outs with the mainstream of nobility in "France" because she resisted the amorous intentions of the Prince, and he ruined her socially once he got over
the rejection. She may have even been exiled to "Scotland" or wherever, but Manous Artouche was undergoing his tutelage at that time and had to stay behind in "France" with the Duchess's cousin, Grand Duke Siegfried von Koln, who was (as it happens) the boy's Paladin Instructor. Now Siegfried, once Manous was fully trained and set out on the proper path of Paladinhood, fell
victim to temptations of the flesh possibly brought about by arcane mind control, and he wound up as an Anti-Paladin. [Built-in future BBEG!] His fall from Paladinhood finished off the Duchess's family's fall from grace and they are all wanted/hunted/shot on sight, and their vast holdings have mostly been confiscated by the throne. Manous Artouche does, arguably, still have a valid, legal claim to at least a portion of the Duchess's family holdings, since he was
legally adopted by the Duchess before her downfall.

"Now that I can walk free of this place I can get to my mum on my own. I would not trouble you kind folk further. Let us make for the surface now. I would see the sunlight again." If there are no objections he sets off with only a slight limp out of the cavern via tunnel you had not seen as it was hidden by a floor to ceiling rock formation. Perhaps one of you would have noticed it had you ventured deeper into the caves and perhaps not. In any case he does not take the obvious passage forward. "Right this way good folk. We'll be quit of this dark pit in minutes." You perceive that you are moving upward slowly as you progress along the mostly narrow tunnel. This one is mostly natural with little evidence that the miners found any minerals of interest here.

Tabitha takes a deep breath of the slowly freshening air and sighs happily.

"Out of the dark pit. Those are my new favorite words, along with, 'Oh, here's that money you wanted.'"

The little fellow smiles at Tabitha, "we are of a mind lady, we are of a mind. Watch your heads, now the ceiling is a bit low ahead for taller folk such as yourselves..."

Wobblecog leads you up and around various tunnels, some natural and some carved. soon you find a narrow switch back ramp leading upward and reversing at a landing every 20' or so. It leads down as well. "I'd guess that the miners opened this up an a air shaft or emergency exit of some sort. It is a bit of a climb, but not onerous." A climb of perhaps 60 feet up over a distance of perhaps three times that back and forth leads you to a small stoutly build three sided shed with louvers for walls. One of them is latched and hinged at the top. Wobblecog throws the latch and pushes out allowing you to step out onto a hillside in a stand of pines.

It is now late afternoon best you can tell. "Well good folk I am most pleased to have met you. It was most fortuitous for me and as well given I have brought you safely to the surface."
