Shaman's Spirit Companion and OA's

Last week I started a thread asking about the viability of the Bear Shaman build. During the course of that thread, some questions came up regarding how the SC works. The SC is a conjuration and conjurations can't be attacked by definition. However, the SC power clearly says that it can be targeted by Melee and Ranged attacks only. I also recall somebody saying that your SC cannot be targeted by OA's and this is where I'm confused. I assumed since an OA is typically a MBA that the SC could be the target of an OA since it's a melee attack.

So my question simply is, can your SC be the target of an OA? If they cannot be targeted, why is that? Or rather, what is the rule that states they cannot be targeted? I'm struggling to find a concise answer in the PHB's.

Thanks and happy hunting!
