Show Your Ideal Weapons Table

Here's mine.
Off-Hand weapons do less damage than two-handed weapons but can combine with a shield or other 1 handed weapon.
Two-handed weapons do more damage but disallow shields and other weapons.
Ranged weapons do less damage but afford more safety and are more effective against charging or flying swooping targets.
Bludgeoning weapons should have a stun, daze, unconscious dynamic when it critically hits.
Perhaps slashing and piercing weapons could have a weakened, slowed, ongoing condition when they critically hit.
We've got to take out the multiple attacks per turn aspect of weapon speed. Multiple attacks should be awarded with experience.
I think using a shield or another weapon at the same time is a good enough reward for weapon speed.
The weapons are arranged according to lesser to greater damage. I took out the damage dice because I haven't yet really thought about that other than ordering the weapons.

Bludgeoning Weapons
unarmed punch
unarmed kick
gauntlet off-hand
pole-arm off-hand
staff two-handed
club off-hand
great club two-handed
flail/nunchaku off-hand
mace off-hand
hammer off-hand
battle/war hammer two-handed

Bludgeoning and Piercing Weapons

large/battle/war axe two-handed
bastard sword two-handed

Piercing and Slashing Weapons

Thrown Weapons

The only thing I care about is, if they insist on the short sword being strictly better than the dagger, call the short sword "dagger" and call the dagger "knife."

  • 1-Handed Weapon (1d6)
  • 2-Handed Weapon (1d8)
  • Unarmed (1d4)
  • Thrown Weapon (1d6)
  • Missile Weapon (1d6)
  • Large Missile Weapon (1d10)
That would be my list. Thrown/Missile weapons would have ranges and costs that would distinguishe them from eachother. Other than that, I don't see the point in really needing to distinguish a mace from a warhammer from a sword. The only distinction I'd make, if I had to, was what general 'kind' of damage it did (piercing, hacking, blunt, etc.).

For the BASE rules in 5e, I think this should be it. Then they could add "modules/options/dials/whatever" to drill-down into more detail/definitions for those that want to have game-mechanics based differences between a Long Sword and a Broad Sword, for example.

IMHO, the entire 5e system needs to be like this to have any chance in hell of 'unification'. Think of it like crayons; the absolute most BASIC colors would be, say, Blue, Red, Yellow, Black, White. That's it. For those that want more, add Orange, Green, Brown, Grey, Purple. Then simply keep increasing various 'pre-made' colors for more and more 'detail'.

I don't think WotC can do it, however. I'm pretty sure the folks they have writing 5e won't be able to distill everything down to the absolute basics. Even if they do, I can see the suits saying "No way! If you do that, nobody will need to buy any of our pre-planned supplemental rules expansion books! They'd be able to create their own stuff!" :hmm:

"1-Handed Weapon (1d6)
2-Handed Weapon (1d8)
Unarmed (1d4)
Thrown Weapon (1d6)
Missile Weapon (1d6)
Large Missile Weapon (1d10)"

I like the idea but also want to use 1d12 in that.
How about,
unarmed 1d4
10 foot reach weapon 1d6 (because there is less power in swinging and stabbing with a long weapon)
thrown weapon 1d6
bow arrow 1d6
1 handed light weapon (ex. dagger) 1d6
1 handed off-hand (ex. short sword) 1d8
crossbow arrow 1d8
1 handed main (ex. long sword) 1d10
2 handed 1d12 (if you don't use a heavy shield and lose +2 to your AC, you have a chance to do +2 extra damage with two-handed weapons over a main 1 handed weapon)

bludgeoning -- stunned condition on a critical hit
piercing/slashing -- weakened condition on a critical hit

Now here is where players need to consider the value of having an off-hand weapon.
I'm trying to promote the idea that every 5 levels you get an additional action. But with limitations.
You can swing a main weapon only 1 time and an off-hand weapon 1 time at 5th level.
You can swing a main weapon 2 times and an off-hand weapon 1 time at 10th level.
You can swing a main weapon 2 times and an off-hand weapon 2 times at 15th level.

You could also use a shield, gauntlet or steel boot as an off-hand weapon and do 1d4+1 or 1d4+2 bludgeoning damage. The damage should not be higher because you also get the benefit of a +1 for light or +2 for heavy shield.

Small Weapon - You can hide these weapons easily. d4 Damage. Example: Dagger

One-handed Weapon - These are your ordinary weapons. d8 damage. Example: Sword, Axe, Maul

Two-Handed Weapon - These Weapons require two hands. d12 damage. Example: Greatsword, Great Axe

Long Weapon - These weapons require two hands, have Reach 2. d8 damage. Example: Long Spear

Personally, I don't like such a wide spread in damage die expressions. d4 / d8 / d12 is such a wide spread that to me it makes d4 weapons functionally useless. Especially considering Fighters will be adding so many additional damage bonuses onto their swings that 1d12 + mods will far outshine anything you might get with a d4. Unless using these extremely damageless weapons grants you something extra, like a larger crit-range. Because being able to "conceal" those weapons is in no way worth the loss in damage.

I much prefer the d4 / d6 / d10 spread or d6 / d8 / d10.

1: Unarmed

2: 1 handed weapons

3: 2 handed weapons

4: Bows and Crossbows.

Your weapon may have one special property of your choice and does the damage type of your choice; range is piercing only (except the sling).

Choices include:

Versatile
Specialist (e.g. Greatbow)
Cutting (+2 to damage against light armour)
Penetrating (+2 to hit against heavy armour)
Aerodynamic (Throwable)
Defensive (2 handed only)
Reach (2 handed only)
Entangling (e.g. Net or Garrotte).
Rapid Reload (Bow)
Off Hand.
Concealed.
Improvised

Fighter-types get a free bonus ability with their weapon of choice, with actual fighters getting to name a bonus ability for a weapon the first time they pick it up.
