Size stats for a huge greatsword

Our party recently came into possession of a Storm giants greatsword (huge greatsword). We are low level, sort of an ancient tomb kind of thing, and we want to get the thing back to town and sell it.

The discussion came up about the size of the sword. We can't find it anywhere on the size of huge weapons and up. In Montes Arcana Evolved it says to keep doubling the weight for each size you go up. That would make it weigh 32lbs. We're talking about a 12000lb, 21ft tall giant here, no way.

Any ideas on the weight and length of this weapon?

check out stats for maul and muttock of titans from DMG in wondrous items section. IIRC they are huge weapons so you could use them for reference.

RAW: you keep doubling for size. Most of the medium size gear weights don't make sense either, just go with it. :p

edit: IRL, it wouldn't so much be the weight, as the shear SIZE of the damn thing... I'd require a wagon... or it'd have to be dragged...

Theoretically if the item doubles in each dimension it should weigh 8 times as much, assuming the same composition. I can't remember how the rules handle it in this case though.

So 16x weight of a medium?

Agreed. After we defeated the 'boss', just for effect, my character enlarged and pulled the sword out like sword in the stone kind of way. We then started talking about transporting the thing when we got curious about the size and weight of the sword and the session ended. Maybe two of the PCs can carry it on their shoulders or rig up a sled and drag the thing with our pack mule.

So yeah, the weights not really an issue, just how cumbersome it is. Just more curiousity than anything. Thanks.

For armor, doubling actually kind of makes sense, since the armor wouldn't need to be twice as thick (to offer the same relative protection), just cover more surface area.

(Actually, having just written that, I wonder whether quaprudeling wouldn't be the best rule for armor?)

RAW says to double per size increase but this leads to nonsensical results.

Volume (& thus weight) cube every time you double linear dimensions. So Huge Greatsword=Base Weight*64 (BW^3*3)

A greatsword is shorter than the person wielding it, by how much varies. Though in general many were described as being long enough that when placed tip on the ground between the feet they reached up to about the chin to nose of the wielder.

So for a storm giant you're talking a roughly (EDIT: closer to 500lb) about 18 feet long sword. With a blade like the rotor of a small helicopter and quillions(sp) maybe a yard across.

Well, German and Swiss zweihänder in the 14th century were 5 to 6 ft long, ceremonial versions could even be as long as 7 ft. But then again those were the biggest swords ever used in history. There are other two-handed blades that aren't that long, like the Chinese Zhan Ma Dao, the Japanese No-Dachi, the Scottish Claymore, and the whole array of so-called "bastard swords" like the Japanese Katana, the German Großes Messer and the various type of european longswords, particularly XVII and XVIIIb (see http://www.oakeshott.org/Typo.html).
