So... about sunder...

I've seen the great Sunder threads pop up so often I've become curious.

Does anyone actually use Sunder?

I know I've had it used on one of my characters because he had the only weapon worth a damn in that fight, but it's one fight in at least 200 battles (and lord knows how many encounters total).

How about you? Do you use Sunder? Is Sunder used against you? Is Sunder used at all in games you've played?

I've used it once - as a Readied action to Sunder the sorceror's spell component pouch when he went to cast. I was lucky that the spell required a material component.

Aside from that, I've only (and rarely) seen it used by NPCs.

You can Sunder a Hydra?

You can kill it by sundering the heads off and sealing the wounds with fire or acid damage, if you don't then two heads grow where one use to be. Considering they have loads of fast healing this probably a better way to do it than destroying the body like we did.

Check my thread in the Rules section.

My half-ogre fighter/barbarian uses it occasionally against mooks, if he thinks their morale will break along with their swords.

As a DM, I'm considering creating a Sunder specialist foe, because my PCs are a bit too far ahead of the wealth-by-level guidelines ...

I love sunder, but I rarely get to play a fighter-type that would have occasion to use it.

I've gotten our current dwarven barbar to take an adamantine two-handed weapon, and he's sundered BBEG weapons twice so far. Every time he does, he looks at me and smiles.

Is there an item hiding somewhere that grants Imp Sunder? He's low on feats, but is very interested.

Sunder isn't as universally hated when you only use it on equipment that is incorrectly sized for the party. :D

I use it now and then. But usually the PCs weapon is harder to kill/destroy than the wielder...

Just don't build +1 flaming, frosty, shocky and keen weapons and you're pretty safe vs Sunder. Mithril weapon +3 or adamant +1 and your weapon retains it's hardness against adamant weapons.

I love the idea of sunder, but it's execution leaves a lot to be desired. Especially when the most valuable treasure you get from defeating enemies is their weapons. So I wrote a PDF to broaden my vision of what the sunder ability should be able to do.

My sig has a link to Sunder Feats, a PDF that makes sunder both more versatile and lots more fun to use.

For example, you can sunder an arrow as it flies at you and then deflect the shrapnel into nearby opponents to deal damage to them.

Arrow Slash
You can sunder a projectile in the air.
Prerequisites: Str 13, Power Attack, Improved Sunder
Benefit: You may use a slashing weapon to attempt to sunder a projectile that would hit you. You gain a +4 on the attack roll and deal double damage to the projectile if you hit. If you do not sunder the projectile you take damage as normal. You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when attempting to sunder the projectile. You may only attempt to sunder one projectile per attack of opportunity.

Shrapnel Sunder
You can turn a sundered object into a deadly strike.
Prerequisites: Str 13, Power Attack, Improved Sunder.
Benefit: If you successfully sunder an object carried by an opponent (such as a weapon or shield), you may deflect the shrapnel to hit an opponent adjacent to you. The opponent you choose must make a reflex save DC (10 + 1/2 character?s level + dex bonus) or suffer 1d6 points of slashing damage. You may make one shrapnel sunder per attack of opportunity.

I also made it more appealing for characters with Sneak Attack to use the Sunder Feat.
