we don not need any more reasons to take ASIs over feats.
primary attack/damage/DC is more than enough to force "20" over anything else.

2. If rangers need to be "nature" oriented, just give them Scouts bonuses at 1st level.
additional proficiency and expertise in Nature and Survival

3. Hunter's mark: 2nd level.
At-will, Bonus action(or when you hit a target with an attack)
You have advantage on Perception and Survival check against the target.
Duration is until the end of your next Long rest or until you mark another target
once per turn you deal +1d4 damage against the target
at 5th level you deal +1d6 damage and you can have 2 targets marked
at 11th level you deal +2d6 damage and you can have 3 targets marked
at 17th level you deal +3d6 damage and you can have 4 targets marked

4. Foe hunter:
you have advantage on attacks vs a target you have marked.

I hope they learned the lesson of 4e that the last thing they should be doing is making all classes feel the same or have the same underlying mechanical structure to them. The alter of balance is very overrated and should not be sacrificed to so often.

sure,
feature can be used certain times per certain rest, but prof per Long rest is easiest to balance, but it can be:

1/short rest
X/short rest
prof bonus/short rest
X×prof bonus/short rest

1/Long rest
X/Long rest
prof bonus/Long rest
X×prof bonus/Long rest

+1 usage on Short rest
+X usage on Short rest

whatever it is, it should avoid usage per ability modifier as plague.

You can have it scale 2-6 times per long rest. But not "Proficiency bonus".

I like the X per long rest +Y per short rest as a baseline. Most things should use that.

But I do agree that every class should be different. Bardic inspiration, which last 1 roll, needs to recover more than rage, which last 10 minutes.

And that you should avoid ability scores.q

Yes. It also supports a greater variety of builds, allowing players to feel they do not have to lean into the "default" primary ability score.
 


Multiclassing screws that up.

You can have it scale 2-6 times per long rest. But not "Proficiency bonus".
It would be an easy rule to track "class proficiency bonus" like multiclass spellcasting. For abilties you can use prof bonus per day you look at the individual class. Just as you look at the individual class when you look what spells you cam prepare. No need for extra rules. Just have one more section for multiclass characters.

I really don't know how ability modifier has advantages over my proposal. It is quite possible that this scales just as much independant from your class that prof bonus per day.

Depends. If you assume single class as default, not having an unnecessary, redundand number is easier. If you assume multiclass as default, you are correct.
You need to assume single class AND that each ability is equal in power.

That 2 uses of bardic inspiration is equal to 2 uses of rage, which is equal to 2 uses of second wind, which is equal to 2 uses of wild shape....

Then sure, using proficiency bonus would work.

But multiclassing exsist, and not all powers are equal.
