Sorcerer Fix - Magic Mechanics

Purpose of this thread: New Spellcasting Mechanic for Sorcerers.

Some random thoughts of the previous threads

1. Spell Points a la Psionicist

2. adopt the Arcana Unearthed rule for sorcerers:
I) 3 slots of level N can be traded up to one of level N+1
II) 1 slot of level N can be split into two slots of level N-1
IIa) Slots derived by splitting a higher-level spell can't be further split!

3. Some of my own
I) Limited number of Spell levels cast within a certain amount of time, Maybe Sorcerer level + 3 spell levels with 10 minutes
II) 10 + spell level in minutes of rest to recover a spell
III) Max spell level castable - 1/2 your sorcerer level - yes 1st level Sorcerer would only have 0 level spells plus Lineage Abilities

Working on it
in re: 2. IIa)

There's no need for further splitting - if you plan ahead and split your spell slots all at the same time, you can pretty much double the number of lower level spells you can cast by splitting up 2 of your highest level spells, and all of your spells of lower levels.

6/6/6/6/5/3 for a 10th-level sorceror becomes
18/12/12/10/4/1

You give up 14 spell levels and gain 36 spell levels.

Okay, that wasn't the best example - that kind of trade works better with the AU spell progressions, but you get the idea. If you allow spell slots to be split and re-split, you're giving the spell-caster their benefit twice. They can split their lower-level slots with impunity since they know they'll get those slots back- and then some- by splitting their higher level slots.

Unearthed Arcana already has a magic system that uses recharge time. Has anyone tested that material out?

How's this?

Spell Weaves: Spell-slots can be woven together to power higher level spells (if the caster can cast spells of the higher level) or unwoven to recharge lower level spell slots of future use.

Weaving: To weave a higher level spell-slot, a caster must sacrifice a number of spell slots equal to the intended spell level +2. Thus to weave a 5th level spell, requires 7 spell levels (a 4th and a 3rd, 2 3rd and a 1st etc.). Casting a spell as a woven spell-slot is a full-round action that provokes an attack of opportunity normally.

Unweaving: The caster can spend 15 minutes in meditation and preparation to recharge lower level spell slots by unweaving higher level spell-slots. The caster may sacrifice spell-slots to recharge two spells of the next lower spell level. Thus unweaving a 5th level spell recharges two 4th level spells. Newly created spell-slots may not be sacrificed in the same unweaving. Thus if the caster wanted to again unweave a newly created spell-slot would require another 15 minute meditation period. The caster may never have more recharged spell-slots at a given time than the maximum spells per day for that spell level allowed by their level.

Example: An 8th level caster (with spells for the day currently at 3/2/2/0/1) really needs to cast a 3rd level spell and so decides to weave two 2nd level spell-slots and a 1st level spell-slot together to cast the 3rd level spell (5 spell levels, as a full round action) bringing themselves to 3/1/0/0/1 after casting the woven spell. Later in the day the caster decides they might be better off to recharge their lower level spells than to hold the 4th level spell slot, so they take 15 minutes to sacrifice the 4th level spell to recharge two 3rd level spell-slots bringing them to 3/1/0/2/0 for the rest of the day. If they wish to further unweave a 3rd level spell it would require another 15 minutes and would result in spells left for the day of 3/1/2/1/0.

The clause: "The caster may never have more recharged spell-slots at a given time than the maximum spells per day for that spell level allowed by their level" prevents the stated abuse of a spellcaster starting out at full spells for the day and unraveling all of their spells into lower spell-slots.

Thoughts?
