Is it historically novel? Certainly Kant held that opinion. I suppose I'm tripping up on what counts as "modern".
Almost all scientists prior to the 19th century held to the infinite and eternal nature of the universe: before then, it was primarily considered pious nonsense to believe in the finite nature of the universe.

History is hilarious.

From what I've been reading, the consensus is that the observations we have of the universe are consistent with both a finite and infinite universe. But this is getting pretty off topic, so this tangent is over from my side. :)
Yes, there are parts of the universe that can never be observed due to light travel time, irrespective of it it is finite or not.

Which means that it is impossible to say that our universe is not inside a crystal sphere!
