Well... I don't know which of your questions were left unanswered... I cited from the book, as you asked, showed you what the difference between the two obscurements is, and why only one of those two validates Hide checks, because being seen ends Hidden (as explained right after the initial part of your own citation from the book). It's not all superneatly together, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it is incomprehensible and a lazy attempt from the writers.
