Let them give stuff away. Have them meet allies who are short of magical stuff. This way they can choose themselves which items to lose.

How about a couple of fireballs and lightningbolts. I'm not the rule master that I used to be but you still have to save for your items if you fail your own saving throw, right? So no need to get "Dysfunctional".

Was this 'Monte Hauling' invented by the DMG author Monte Cook? I bet it was. He's a Monte Hauler of a worst kind.

:)

I think your onto something, what about "Mordenkainen's Oddfunction" that could be cool.
Or "Mordenkainen's Funkyfunction"
Or "Mordenkainen's Wrongjunction"
Or "Mordenkainen's Lil'munchkin"
Or "Mordenkainen's Stinny Frog Cheese"
Well I not quite sure about that last one.
So... Anyone remember Mordenkainen's Lubrication? :D

The Origin of "Monte Haul"

Actually, "Monte Haul" was the name of the host of a game show called "Let's Make a Deal." The ending part of the show involved giving away very valuable prizes. The term "Monte Haul" in gaming came from this aspect of the show--giving people really valuable stuff.

:D

When my friends and I wanted to see what high-
powered characters would look like, he told us to make
20th level characters with whatever kit we wanted to
fight a family of dragons underwater (using the gp level
of equipment suggested for the characters).

We min/maxed our characters, and then he proceeded
to use them against us.

Two characters made low-intelligence characters were
hit with a rod of rulership, and then sent off to attack the
other two party members.

I had a mirror of opposition thrust in front of me, and
was forced to confront myself.

Nothing like having the party's kit work against them.
