Survivor Thread: Animated Fantasy Movies--Hobbit Wins!

I feel bad for Goro Miyazaki - the movie has it's moments, but it misses both the magic of Earthsea and of Studio Ghibli.

Hayao Miayazaki's words after seeing his son's first movie:

“It’s good that he made one movie. With that, he should stop.”

Ouch.

This time, I’m going to stump for Flight of Dragons. Somehow, despite loving The Hobbit and The Last Unicorn back in the day, I never saw it until I was an adult. And it fits perfectly in with those two.

Downvote goes to Phantom Tollbooth. I just don’t have any connection to it.

Probably because Rankin has that unmistakable animation style ;)

I figured this one would be a quick loser, because it came out so early. The book (which is good) came out in the 60s, and the movie came out before any of the other ones as well, so it probably predates most forum posters

Black Cauldron--12 - Adaptation can be a tricky thing, especially when the audience is different than the source material's. But I defy you all to watch it again, without Alexander's excellent novels in the back of your mind; I re-watched it recently with my daughter and it's a seriously good movie. Arguably a much better adaptation of The Book of Three than the sequel for which it's named.

The Dark Crystal--18

*“Magic, do as you will,” the villain who is more driven by depression than malice, the themes of reality and illusion, the general message about the tragedy and beauty of mortality, the metaphor for growing up... So many profound messages in this film, it may well be the most influential film of my childhood.
