Take A Look At The DUERGAR From SCAG

The D&D Extra Life campaign just passed $90,000 -- which means another preview from Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide (which released last week in preferred stores, and will be available everywhere else from November 3rd). This time, we get a look at the Duergar entry! If they hit $100K, we get to see the hi-res labeled map of the northwest portion of Faerün, from Amn to Icewind Dale and the Moonshae Isles to the Dalelands.

Previous previews include the Preface, Contents Page, Greenflame Blade cantrip, and Urban Bounty Hunter, and the Mastermind, a new rogue archetype.

Hasn't that always been the duergar creation story?

and the githyanki/githzerai etc.

The grimlocks were given an illithid slave race origin story in 3.5 ( I thought it was earlier): "According to Dragon #327, grimlocks were originally surface-dwelling barbarians with stonelike skin. After enduring their bloodthirsty raids for generations, other races eventually united to drive them into the underearth. There they managed to survive, though many became enslaved by mind flayers, who bred them like cattle, augmented them with their profane sciences, and sometimes sold them to other slave-holding races of the depths" (from wikipedia)

Does it seem inappropriate to you that a group of alien creatures with powerful mental powers would enslave a bunch of races?

No. I thought the grimlock enslavement was from an older edition (1e or 2e). I read up and found out it was from the 3/3.5 era.
Were the Giff ever a race enslaved by the mind flayers?

Citation needed... Not seeing anything of the sort in my 1e through 3.5e material.
Their enslavement by illithids is mentioned in the 3e FRCS entry on duergar, so maybe it's just an FR thing?
