1) Swordmage

2) Shaman

3) Avenger

1) Fighter/Mage-type, not saying Gish, they are an awesome Githyanki thing (like Anti-Paladin); what is the obsession?

2) Grizzly Adams, cool, I used to party with that guy.

3) Wasn't that a Paladin build in 4th Ed?

Did not vote for Barbarian, Elf, Dwarf or Halfling just as class but I'll happily play all those as races that have a class (e.g. Barbarian Thief, Elf Illusionist, etc.) as well.

Votes here for Assassin, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Illusionist, Wizard, Other arcane, Rogue-as-Thief, Ranger, Cavalier. I'd have to see what they do with Bard before deciding, but the last few versions have been lacking.

My vote for "Other arcane specialist" is for Necromancer.

I don't at all mind Paladins and Monks being in the game but I don't tend to play them.

Were they in the first 4e PH? If not, they're probably not in first-run 5e either and thus not listed.
Swodmage wasn't in the 4e PH, but it was the first class that came out after that (in the FRPG), and I've thought for a long time that the swordmage / duskblade / whatever you want to call an arcane front-line warrior archetype is broader and more interesting than some classes that have made the first player's book in a lot of editions of D&D even excluding the BCMI racial classes (though the elf class pretty much is an example of the archetype). There are some highly focused classes I like (classic LG paladins, to name one) but I think they're pretty narrowly defined and don't work in a lot of campaigns, so I wouldn't put them in the first player's book.

Swordmages as multiclass fighter/wizards aren't really satisfying to me. Most editions prior to 4th didn't go far enough to make the concept unique, instead relegating it to a half-ass wizard or fighter.

The avenger is essentially a divine assassin.

Neither was the Knight/Cavalier but it is in the poll. Edit: nor the psion.

Thanks the gods, should not be in any PHB, IMO, total waste of a full class, let it be what it should, IMO (kit, PrC, PP, etc, etc).

Intelligence for hitting with s sword...really...

...oh, the justifications for this one should be marvellous...*in the voice of Stewie-Family Guy*

Answered pretty much everything but the pure Martial classes and the Divine classes. I wouldn't mind race-as-class at all-- anything to make racial choice important-- but I never play any of the races listed.
