I admit to being somewhat curious as to how they are going to get out now without a third water breathing potion...

Yeah, the gnomes obviously didn't think that far ahead. I didn't have a specific plan, but in the back of my mind I intended that their next adventure would involve them trying to find their way back to the surface, and, naturally, coming up against another Underdark monster in the process.
