The singing/dish juggling scene leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.

They would probably have a really good movie if they put the whole Hobbit trilogy together and cut out all the silliness.

That is one of my favorite parts. And it is the book. I have an audio book of the Hobbit that has a narrator but adds the music and singing in there is quite a lot of it more than in the movie.

Yes, I have read them. I read them the first time back in the 70s.

The Hobbit was not as silly as the movies have made it out to be.

Music and singing is fine, and was in the book. The dish juggling part just looked silly, though, and the theme park ride down the river in the barrels was made to look sillier than it had to be.

I'm not saying The Hobbit movies are bad movies, but they were too campy in many places for my tastes.
