Dain - Into the Shadows

Dain cursed in frustration as his ill-prepared thrust went wide of the creature. But at least Jeovanna had cleaved it! The thing's maw snapped at Dain and it felt like pure good fortune that it missed taking a bite out of him...

And then, in a moment of strange sound and sight, the thing was gone! Dain spun around, and then back around, torch trailing as he held it aloft.

A circle? "Yes, a circle! Let us stand as a copse of proud oaks against the rain and the wind! Let it come then!" His voice was not one of excitement, but rather of practicality.

His blade felt good in his hand, even if their circle might have looked more like a bumpy egg.

Metea

Metea: into the shadows

Metea scrambled to get to a position that felt defensible, but the knowledge that the creature could go where it wished did not comfort her. Having her back to the stone wall, her front guarded by their stronger members, did not mean much if it simply landed on her head! The tiefling was hugging her tail at this point, which was something she'd not done since she was a youth.

Still, something was happening. Glowing yellow eyes seemed to be appearing on the cave wall behind them. If one looked too close, they would seem to disappear... but still, they were there. Blinking. Staring. Watching the caves.

Metea shivered. She almost wished it were back, just so the tension would fade!

Round 2
Initiative:
Jeovanna: 22
Dain: 18
Metea: 16
Annit: 13
Critter 1: 10 (7 points of damage)
Critter 2: 10
Otiroth: 9
Carthum: 5

Annit backed her way into the huddle, positioning herself next to Metea so the arcane duo were protected on all sides. A bead of sweat dripped off her brow, and the rogue’s knuckles whitened from a tense grip upon a leather-handled dagger.

Along the far wall, small tendrils of smoke crept up from the supposed lair’s entrance. The pile of macabre waste had been singed by Otiroth’s magical flame, penetrating into the tight and unknown mysteries within.

It was quiet now as they waited, listening out for that dreaded crackling sound, which arrived soon enough.

Maybe it had a strong hatred of the priest’s glowing shield, or perhaps it wanted to claw a way through to Otiroth as revenge for the flaming of it's home? Either way, with a crispy snap in the air, the little beast came into view facing Carthum. A clawed hand came flying at the half-orc, but bounced violently back off his shield, praise Suru!

But wait, more cracking? Yes, the vile beast had brought a friend! Another appeared before Jeovanna and went to strike at her guts, but narrowly missed as she probably swayed out of the way.

<Carthum & Jeovanna (and anyone else entering melee): DC11 Wisdom save (d20+Wis Modifier). On a fail you are disadvantaged until next round.>

Otiroth

Otiroth: Into the shadows

A second one? A mate perhaps, each as ugly as the other.

Made it difficult to tell the two apart!

Their positioning gave Otiroth a decent view of the area below, and that would no doubt assist his aim- a crackling bolt of fire at the one facing down the barbarian woman, if only because it looked a bit fresher!

If there was to soon be a third, they would be in quite a bit of trouble...

<Spellcasting: firebolt. 19 to hit, 9 damage>

Carthum One-tusk: Into the shadows

Did... did anybody else feel something a little odd?

Carthum would swear upon the Light Everlasting that he felt eyes at his back...

As the demon reappeared, he would raise his shield- and strike back at the blasphemous beast with his mace. Suru's light could purge the darkness, but sometimes a mace could purge much more!

<Will save= 15. 16 to hit, 6 bludgeoning damage with mace>

Jeovanna

Jeovanna: Into the Shadows

Jeovanna felt it, too. The eyes at her back. Her pack. Her pack!

She lashed out with a wild, diagonal strike at the demon only moments after Otiroth's fire touched it. Her pack!

Despite the weapon's size, Jeovanna swung it almost as if it weighed nothing.

Her pack was here!

<Will save 20. 23 to hit, 9 damage>

The beasties take a substantial bashing from the group's early reactions, the explorers have prepared themselves well!

Fire burns at hair and skin, a mace slams brutally into one's gut, and a greatsword strike slashes and lacerates without mercy. The foes squeal with pain in horrible unison, but still they stand.

"Resilient buggers," Annit remarks as she glances over her shoulder. Despite their small statures, these nasties certainly seem to pack a punch when it comes to endurance...

<Critter 1 (Facing Carthum): 13 points of damage
Critter 2 (Facing Jeovanna): 18 points of damage>

Dain - Into the Shadows

There was another one?! No matter. More tales to tell.

He crouched slightly, preparing himself as his comrades attacked and defended in a flurry of action. There were few things better than a good tale over a campfire.

Did I enjoy tales as a boy? Was I ever a boy, or did I emerge fully born from some sacred cave, summoned from clay and dirt by Essithea's pale hand? Perhaps to be her lover? Hah! Now who is telling tales?!

Facing down the creature in range of him, he once again recoiled at its hideous visage, but nonetheless struck out at it with his blade.

<Wisdom check: 11>
<To hit: 14>
<Damage: 6>

Metea: into the shadows

A second one!

Metea had what should have been an ideal position to strike, but her hands were shaking, and once more, the spell fizzled at her fingertips.

Fear was a great motivator, though, and while some of the faintly glowing eyes blinked out of existence, others popped open elsewhere at the same time.

It was probably best Metea did not turn around, and did not see her 'spell' in action!

Annit watches as Jeovanna and her foe go toe to toe, waiting for an opening to strike. It comes soon enough and with dagger in hand she lunges forwards with speed, but not precision. "Dammit," the young rogue mutters, her blade failing to connect with the enemy's hairy chest.

The resolve of the beasts seems to have solidified, the wounds poured upon them only making the pair more angry, and feisty! Dain's swing misses the small target, as the ugly foe ducks its head hearing the swish of an oncoming sword. It is within that smallest moment of time that a pincer moves in, tearing at the ranger across his chest, drawing blood-a-plenty.

Jeovanna isn't spared hostility either. With a slash, a serrated claw swipes against the musculature of a leg, a great gash left as evidence of a viscous strike.

<Annit Wis save = 18 (Pass). Annit attack = 10 (Miss).
Critter 1 rolled 50/50 chance of attacking Carthum or Dain, and selected Dain hehe. Attack = 16 (hit). Dain takes 10hp damage! Critter 2 rolled 50/50 chance of attacking Jeovanna or Annit, and selected Jeovanna. Attack = 22 (hit). Jeovanna takes 6hp damage!>
