Background:
Aah, what to say of young Gurd Bloodhammer. He was an unusaul child. Almost never had the Elder Dwarfs seen such a lively child. His parents had such trouble controlling the young Gurd, that on an early age they send him to learn the ways of the Smith. They thought that with hard work and little distraction, Gurd would grow up as an ordinary Dwarf.

His talent for the work was great. He pounded on the metal for days without tiring one bit. He could have been one of the best weapon and armorsmiths if only he didn't have such peppery mind.

The years of learning the ways of being a Smith fell hard upon young Gurd. The rigid way of the Dwarfs began to take their toll on his young mind. he would get into fights with his fellow students, which, by the way, he would always win. The teachers would give him harsh and disciplenery punishment that took away the last of his hope that he could live among the Dwarfs in their mountainhomes.

When he finished his studyday, Gurd would sneak out his bed and heat up the Forge. There he made the Armour and Hammer he uses today. It was constructed as only the best Smiths could. The night he would finish his armour he took the bread and water he saved over the last weeks and walked to the Workplace. He worked almost all night to lay the final hand on his armour and his hammer. After finishing his work, he cleaned the anvil and his workplace. He put on his armour and hung his hammer on his back. When he walked his last steps in his birthplace and took his first steps on the road that would get him away from all this, he could see the sun come up to guide him on his new beginning.

Background: Dweldan Sirmex, heir to Baron Sirmex

Dweldan Sirmex was born 20 years ago in a sizable barony, the eldest and sole male heir of the Sirmex noble bloodline. He was one of twins; he was born a few minutes before his sister, Salvella. His childhood was typical for nobility, training in the art of the sword, being taught about nobility and heraldry, that sort of thing. His sister however, developed to be a sorcerer, like her mother.

Dweldan’s mother died in childbirth, and could not be retrieved by the clerics for some reason. Salvella hence was the target of most of his father’s attention, reminding him much of his wife. Dweldan was jealous at his sister the sorcerer. He was jealous of her sorcery more than the attention. At least, that was what he told himself.

Just before his fourteenth birthday Dweldan met his betrothed. A beautiful girl, for whom his father would have paid a rather large dowry. He was supposed to marry her two years later, shortly after his 16th birthday, but within one week, just after his birthday, all plans were cancelled.

Dweldan was roaming around the keep and overheard his father discussing something with his most trusted adviser. They were discussing whether to make Salvella the heir of the house of Sirmex, considering her sorcery to be a sign of divine intention or sign of rigthful rulership. As a young adolescent being trained to do nothing but ascend to the title of Baron of Sirmex, Dweldan was incredibly irritated and stormed up to his sister’s room, demanding her to explain whether she used her powers to get her in this position or not. She said “Not my sorcerous power... our father just likes me better”. This led to a rather heated row with his sister, with accusations flying back and forth. In the end he slew his sister because of nervousness, agitation and adolescent rage. With her dying breath his sister cursed him to never sire any children.

Dweldan screamed for his father right after and told him everything. His father hit Dweldan once, knocking his son to the ground, but after that he just cried. The father of Dweldan’s wife-to-be heard about the story, as well as the curse and forbade his daughter to marry Dweldan. The story spread and the Baron, still loving his son, did not bring him to justice, even though what Dweldan did infuriated him. His father did beat him with his scepter for a few weeks, and Dweldan, out of guilt, accepted this as his punishment. The other nobles avoided Baron Sirmex from now on, suspicious of a keep which held the spirits of two sorceroeus women who did not return after clerical ceremonies, and noone wanted to marry off his daughter to Dweldan.
Clerics were brought to see if the curse could be lifted, perhaps in combination with a quest for attonement, but the clerics said that a dying curse is far too powerful for simple spells to help. A powerful seer was brought. She found out that the only thing that would lift the curse was to bathe in the blood of one of the most sorcerous beings in the world: a dragon of at least 800 years old. The tensions in the house ran high and Dweldan armed himself with some of the arms and equipment he could find that night. He stealthily creeped out of the keep in determination to gain the skill and equipment required to slay such a beast in order to keep his bloodline alive and sire children.

After several years of roaming forests, swamps and wastelands further and further away from his home, stealthily avoiding Goblins and Orcs, he started to sell his skills to the highest bidder. Using his hard earned cash to learn everything there is to know about dragons as well as improving his equipment, he now avoids nobility as much as he can, though he can be heard inquiring about the latest stories and gossip in seedy taverns. There is much use for an intelligent and hardy man in the world of mercenaries, and Dweldan fills that role admirably. He ceased to use his last name long ago. He is nothing but a ranger now.
