I have my own similar rule:

You can play any officially printed class/subclass you want, but it's your responsibility to explain how your abilities function within the context of the game world. So yes, you can plan a glamour bard, but it's your responsibility to explain how and why your Mantle of Inspiration consistently translates into temporary hit points. It's magic is not an acceptable answer.
