I'm proud to announce I'm one of the people responisble for creating Thorgal: The Roleplaying Game.

Thorgal: The Roleplaying Game is set in the challenging world of the Vikings. This tabletop gameis a unique combination of fantasy and science-fiction genres.

The game is going to be funded with the help of fans in June 2023, via Gamefound crowdfunding platform. As for now, there is a campaign draft available, which will be updated with new information (link Thorgal: The Roleplaying Game by Dark Rabbit). Follow us if you're interested in the project!

The game is planned to be released in Q1 2024.

The game will be available in Polish, English and French, with free Starter in PDF.

The game is based on a famous graphic novel series Thorgal, created by a Belgian writer Jean Van Hamme and a Polish comic book artist Grzegorz Rosiński.

Just checked and it was Thorgal himself.

Yup, it's got a plenty of sci-fi elements, starting with a main character who comes from another star system! Especially the newer comic issues, like Neokora and Tupilaqs, explore this area (no spoilers though).

Thorgal — limited cover version

Each of our crowdfunding campaigns offers something for tabletop roleplaying game collectors, and this time it won’t be any different!

During the Gamefound campaign, Thorgal: The Roleplaying Game core rulebook will be available in 2 cover versions: a standard one, with art by Fred Vignaux, and a limited one, with art by the unmatched Grzegorz Rosiński.

The rulebook with the limited cover will be available only during the campaign. It will not be available later for retail sale.

Once the campaign starts, there will be a variety of stretch goals to unlock (but we are not revealing them just yet

). Some of them will physically expand the core rulebook content (in both standard and limited cover versions), so back us during the campaign to get them in print!

And what after the campaign? As we have already mentioned, the limited cover version will not be available — but you will still be able to get the standard one! The only difference will be the content, as the retail copies will not include the unlocked stretch goals.

Thorgal – Downtime mechanics

One of Thorgal’s key motivations is his family: wife Aaricia, son Jolan and daughter Louve. No matter how many times cruel gods thwart his plans, forcing him to wander across foreign lands, the desire to come back home — wherever that would be — and be reunited with his loved ones gives him the strength to fight against his destiny.

In Thorgal: The Roleplaying Game, we provide you with mechanics allowing you to create your own ‘home.’ It could be a village, a keep, a ship, or any other place where you live among your own people, building a community together. What is more, one of those people could become your Soulmate, that is someone with whom your character can forge a special bond. For the purposes of this description, we are going to use the general term ‘settlement.’ This stage in the game, called Downtime, immediately follows your party’s return from an expedition.

Each settlement is described with the use of the following 4 stats, or numerical values: Defense, Prosperity, Fortitude and Stability, corresponding to different aspects of the residents’ life and their struggle for survival. The stats can be increased by spending treasures, received as prizes for successfully completed tasks. Treasures are an abstract measure of wealth and their amount depends on actions and decisions taken in the course of an expedition.

Upon returning to the settlement, we check what has happened to it during our absence - it can be nothing, and it can happen that it will be a target of an attack. The aforementioned stats are used to perform checks determining whether the settlement has successfully stood against the odds. If it’s a failure, the Stability is decreased by 1 (the starting value of 5). When it reaches 0, something bad happens to the settlement. If the check is a success, the Stability is increased by 1, to the max value of 10 (when the settlement reaches the level of prosperity).

As has been already mentioned before, you can either use the collected treasures to develop your settlement or – following the example of Kriss de Valnor – invest in yourself, for example by way of improving your equipment. The same applies to Experience Points. You can spend them to increase either your skills or the level of Bond with your Soulmate (provided that you have one). The higher the Bond level, the greater your character’s determination to return home safely and be reunited with his or her Soulmate – which is also reflected by the game mechanics and special bonuses the character is given.

Second, the rewards!

Thorgal: The Roleplaying Game core rulebook, available in both PDF and print. As regards the hard copies, there will be two cover versions to choose from — standard and limited. The rulebook will be expanded as new stretch goals are unlocked, but this applies only to the version available during the campaign – the one available later in retail sale will not include the additional content!
To each hard copy of the core rulebook, PDF is added at no charge!

Third, add-ons!

Northland Sagas adventure expansion, available in both PDF and print. It will include from 4 to 6 ready-to-play adventures, depending on the stretch goals unlocked during the campaign.
