Two Towers DVD Technical glitch?

{Yes, Piratecat, I know I posted this in an existing thread, but I decided the topic didn't really match, so no one would notice my plea. Mock my pain if you must, but please forgive the double posting.}

Ok, so I go out and buy my TT Extended version (just the 4 disc set...that gollum statue looks all pasty and icky to me; would have been more interested in statuettes of the two towers of the title, but hey, no one asked me) and pop the first appendices disc (#3) in my DVD player. And lo, nothing happens, except for the player switching back and forth from track 1 to track 2, with nothing but a black screen. Ditto for disc 4. Discs 1 and 2 play fine.

So I take the whole thing back to thse store, and exchange for another one. No luck--same thing happens.

Has anyone else had this problem?? It's not like my DVD player is really old...we got it new last year!

Has your player been moved or violently bumped recently? Or have you dusted in that room recently? It could be a sign that your laser reader could be slightly out of alignment or dirty.

What type of DVD player do you have? Do you have access to another one that you can try it on? It could be some incompatibility with your particular brand/model. Lucky!

Personally, I think it might be a sign from Tolkien. Maybe he's planning to be reborn in your town on 12/12/2012. Now that I have decrypted his message, he should leave you alone.

I have had similar problems. For example there are 2 documentaries on the AOTC xtra's dvd that my dvdplayer cannot play. You might consider contacting the manufacturer of your dvd-player and see if they've heard of this problem.

With mine, I could've gotten it fixed, but I would've had to have walmart ship it back to them, they'd fix it (maybe or maybe not charge me, it was unsure at the time (the charge was going to be like $40)) and then send it back to walmart. There was something about a code that some dvds use that this player didn't recognise and they'd modify the player to incorporate that. Specially if the player is an older model (doesn't really matter how long ago you bought it, what matters, at least for my situation, was what model it was (ie if it was an older model)).

Another example is that my dvd-player is completely incapable of playing the movie Oceans Eleven. The dvd plays fine on other dvd-players, it just does not work on mine.

Why is that?

I got a player that cannot play some DVDs, and I don't know if it's the DVD itself or the player. I even got some weird cases in which the DVD is able to play for some time but then won't play anymore.

I just hope they fine-tune DVD technology for the next-generation of players and DVD encoding.

I've got a Zenith DVD/VCR combo that hasn't moved from its spot for a year

I think it is, indeed, the fault of the software running my DVD player. The good news is that we are good friends with our local TV repair guy (he actually sold us the thing last year). And when I called him, he said he'd been shipped an upgrade disk for just my model. He brought it over...

...and then spent 30 minutes on the phone with Zenith when the disk would not load properly. To be continued...

I had some problems with the first movie disk locking up at two chapter transitions. I had it replaced and have not rechecked it.
