The three DnD pillar are overrated. Exploration is futile, social is absolute a waste of time, PX is overrated.
The only things that's matter is to crush your enemies. See them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their women!

And kills or mate with some dragons....

  • There are perspectives on roleplaying generally that are nearly impossible to fully conceive without abandoning D&D as your primary game of choice. But it's less about abandoning the system as it is about abandoning the ethos/mindset. There's a reason that "players on a power fantasy trip" / power gaming has remained a peripheral concern for the duration of the RPG hobby, and its because wargaming in general (from which D&D is derived) is largely embedded in an ethos where "power fantasy" is a locus / primary motivator of play. It is an essentially competitive impulse, to prove as a player that you are the superior planner and tactician relative to a situational opponent. Dungeoncrawling is just an extension of this competitive "power fantasy" impulse.
  • Changing RPG systems is highly unlikely to result in an overall change in experience, relative to changing the underlying thought paradigms related to the exercise. (Something I believe Celebrim has noted on several fronts in these forums). Which is why PbtA specifically feels so much different in play relative to D&D. It's not that the overall schema of play is so radically different in setup and execution (obviously with some key notable differences in authority). It's more about the mindset the players are expected to adopt to achieve the system's goals.
  • The way a character sheet presents a character to a player has radically more impact on a player's attitude toward the game in question than we want to admit.
