Updated Monster Summoning Lists???

Because I forgot about them? :D They are actually listed on my document, I just completely forgot they existed!

Yeah, Elemental templates are OK for summon monster, and I'd let Summon Nature's Ally summon those templated creatures as well. Probably even allow the Wood Element for Druids, if there were any around.

I have noticed that in fiend folio there are some additional creatures in their individual enteries that say they may be summoned via summon monster. Has anyone made a comprehensive list with both PH and FF monsters?

I have reverse-engineered the SM and SNA tables, and with some exceptions (like the sharks, who I think got the shaft between the writing of the PH and the finition of the MM), the rule is:
1: 1/2 and less
2: 1
3: 2
4: 3
5: 4-5
6: 6-7
7: 8-9
8: 10-11
9: 12-13

With an additional rule that monsters able to deal ability damage (if they have poison, for example) are considered 2 CR higher.

I have made summon monster and summon nature's ally tables based on those rules for the Tome of Horror.

Well, after an initial persual of FF, here is the updated Summon Monster tables.

I have also added templated Dragons and Hydras to the possible list (thanks to Azul for pointing out the Dragons and some Outsiders I had missed). I deliberately let the Dragons be lower than the standard CR monster, as their CRs are generally recognized as too low anyway.

Green Slime, thanks for posting these great lists. I like them better than the Dungeon Magazine lists since those were mostly based on CR and did not seem properly balanced to account for monster special abilities.

That Dragon article did have some interesting suggestions, though. For example, as the lists get longer and longer, the spells seem to get overpowered by their extreme versatility. The Dragon article suggested a DM might limit a spellcaster to a limited list of monsters from each level selected from the broader list. The article suggests 3 monster choices from each list to start with, expandable through minor research (1 day and some successful skill checks to add a monster to the list) to as many as 3 + relevant ability modifier for a given summon monster spell level. That way a spellcaster can customize the list to reflect his or her personality and tactics, while not having an excessive versatility. I can envision also allowing feats that allow a spellcaster to expand the number of choices per spell level as well, maybe +2 choices per spell level for selecting a feat ("Expanded Summoning" feat, perhaps?).

I have to agree that more choices does mean more power (unless all the new choices are well below the original power level). The question is how much.

Perhaps a reasonable change is to require each caster to pick a certain number of creatures from a large summoning list as those he can summon. This could even increase as the character advances in level (start with 2, gain 1 every 3 levels, for example).

WotC's Character closeups with additional summoned monsters (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/DnD_CC_20001124e.asp and http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/cc/cc20001229a) somewhat imply that he has his own unique choices for the spell.

An accomplished conjurer, Taerhannon opts for some...unusual choices for his summon monster spells.

Thanks for that tip NIghtfall, I'll have a look at that resource as well.

I started browseing through CC and CC2 (which I own) but I got distracted by the monster descriptions, and then by life in general.

There are some very good monsters in those books, I can't remember seeing any Outsiders. (but I got sidetracked...)

zoroaster100 and Glyfair, you both have valid and interesting suggesting for scaling back the size of the list for individual spellcasters. I'll be really thinking over these for my next campaign.

However my experience with my players is;
a)They'd rather blow it up, or chop it to pieces themselves.
b)They are limited by their alignment, so the choice is not quite as large as it at first seems.
c) The biggest advantage is for the DM (me!) who has the resources to actually know what all these monsters are. They only own the MM, and even then don't look at it during the game

I had an idea of only allowing alignment templates that match the characters alignment, thus getting rid of the annoying "neutral+" advantage.

I'm thinking of perhaps allowing the use of the elementals (and elemental templates) for non-druids only through metamagic feats. (for the next campaign, present will stay as is).
