using 2d20 along with Fatigue

le Redoutable

Ich bin El Glouglou :)
simple!
you roll 2d20
if you use the highest die you lose 1 fatigue point
if you use the lowest die you regain 1 fatigue point
if both dice are of same value neither you regain nor you lose the fatigue point

What do you mean “if you use”? Your mechanic sounds like the player chooses which die they want.

Are the 2d20 rolled as part of some other check? Like, if the character needs to dodge something, they make a Dexterity check, presumably against a set Difficulty Rating. For argument’s sake, let’s say DR 12.

They roll 16 and 9. They can use the 16 (succeeding the check), but take one Fatigue. If they choose the 9, they fail, but regain one Fatigue.

If they roll 15 and 18, they player could choose the 15, which is still a success, but they gain a Fatigue point for taking the lower roll.

Is that how your mechanic is supposed to work? Is this for a system that typically uses 1d20 for rolls, and 2d20 represents an “extra effort” mechanic, hence the fatigue? Or is it for a system where 2d20 is the default mechanic for most checks?

It's kinda modern. You succeed at a cost ( IE the 16) OR you fail but gain something ( IE the 9).
So every dice roll counts. The 15,18 combo is good; A 2, 5 means at least you get something from the misery.
