Well with a subrace you expect things to be genetically passed and perhaps be an evolution for the location so a whole tribe will have this quality, but with a more abstracted version i called archetype you get the tough brutish guy whose brother might be the erudite natural born archer or sometimes seem genetic like as in a family line (or maybe just heroic manifestation for those of a bloodline ->Dragonmarks?) or whatever, I guess i was just thinking in terms of flavor.

"Archetypes", as you described, are fun. However, things which are learned, and nigh-random genetic abilities are hard to define in such mechanical context, if they ever need to be expressed by something other than overall character building. Genetic abilities through a family line are much more interesting, though. I always loved Naruto's concept of "kekkei genkai", and are worthy of work.
Geography-based abilities, however, seem to be the initial discussion.
