Yes I did read it. But to get more apps with it, you need to encourage app writers to include it.

Would it not make more sense to try to convince Apple to include a basic VGA out process that can be overridden by an app to do something special?

There already is a basic method for outputting images (and therefor video) out the port, that's covered. The issue is that it's strictly a "send your image there" situation; the OS built-in stuff -- menus, scrolling tables, buttons, etc. -- can only be displayed easily on the device's built-in screen.

Mirroring the display with hardware would make it all automatic. It might be possible to do it at the OS level, depending on how the display buffers and such work. Right now, though, neither is an option.

As a result, the reason you won't see it in more apps unless it's really key to the app's functionality is the same reason you don't have four-wheel drive in every car: it requires a bunch of extra engineering and expense, so you only put it in vehicles where you know that people will pay the extra money for it. It's just not feasible to add it to every vehicle, especially if your competitors aren't and you won't sell enough additional units or be able to charge a higher price.
