About 5 years, a Human (Alarthi) Ice Tracker (ranger-type class), from 1st to just hit 8th level. This is my fourth character in the campaign, the next highest level was maybe 3rd.

I personally have not played a character for any length of time since 1982, when I began playing. I have DM'd nearly the entire time. Longest running campaign is our current one: began 31 Jan. 1999, play once per month on average. Longest running character is a half-elf cleric 3/rogue 3/wizard 7 named Zander, who just picked up level 14 (but has not decided what to take next). He has been played since the inception of the campaign, with a short-lived period of "retirement", and has recently come back as a secondary character for the original player (and earns only half experience). If his primary character dies, the secondary will replace him.
Another player has a drow fighter 4/wizard 6/spellsword 3 named Xune that was started at the same time, but retired about a year ago. He is holding her in reserve as a back-up. Both characters began as 2e and were converted.
It has been a relatively high-attrition campaign for us, with ten players (six active) running a total of nearly 30 PC's since it started (some only lasted part of one game session).

1st edition Dragonlance. Two Irda's. One a Wizard of High Sorcery the other a Cavalier. Both went to 18th level which was the max in 1e Dragonlance. It took me two solid years of at least three sessions a week to get them there but what a ride.

whereas in my previous post I had one character played for over 14 years, I have about 20 characters played with a range of 6-10 years each for 1st-2nd ed and champions campaigns.

Ha ha - first character back in '83 with Basic D&D lasted one session in module B1...

Have basically DM'ed ever since. Longest campaign ran 10 years (1995 -2004) and from levels 1-15, in my homebrew world of Overearth... . Saw 8 players come and go with a core group of 4 almost from start to finish.

Since then have only run a 1-year campaign, but planning my next epic at the moment - may go with Freeport... . Also starting a campiogn

What's the longest you've ever played a PC, and what levels did you span? Alternately, what's the longest continuous campaign you've ever played in, and how many characters have you played in it?

Hmm...I have a problem with these questions. You see I played other characters and still am playing other characters in between...I've played entire campaigns in between.

I've been playing in one setting with the same characters since 1989. The setting started years earlier, (1980 I think.) I was a late comer to the game.

In 1st edition I went from 1st to 20+ level in 3 classes (anti-paladin/cleric/magic-user)
In 2nd edition I continued with a converted version.
In 3rd edition I decided to reimage the character and reduce his levels...play with prestige classes.

In that world under one DM I played the following characters over the years:

1st ed: a water elemental specialist magic-user
1st, 2nd, & 3rd ed: a vampire paladin of an evil goddesss called Salustra
1st & 2nd ed: a vampire gladiator
2nd & 3rd ed: a vampire psionicist
2nd ed: a vampire ranger
2nd ed: a vampire beastmaster
2nd ed: a human necromancer
3rd ed: a satry/succubus sorcerer

Under another DM:
a bat sorcerer
a human cleric of Salustra
(paladium system) a human necromancer
(paladium system) a changeling something...can't remember

The world was a bit monty haulish, but I really don't think that matters unless the suspension of disbelief is broken. We had great DMs (Kerri Hunter in Houston and Jade Tinnerman in Austin), so it wasn't an issue. It was a relatively modern setting similar to Eberron with lots of politics. Material was lifted from several sources so there wasn't any hope of publishing the setting. The gaming has died down in the recent years. Kerri has turned to writing more and gaming less and Jade is blind.
