Dragonlance What spell school would Raistlin be in 5E?

What school do you thing Raistlan would be as a 5E Wizard?

Some random thoughts:

I could make an argument for War Magic. He does seem to be a generalist vice a specialist and he is in wars a lot. He served as a Mercenary along side his brother early in life. Later in life (earlier in time) he commanded an Army of Dwarves. He also fought with the Solamnic Army at the High Clerist tower in the first Dragon war. As such he is no stranger to war and Armies.

I could also make an argument for Illusion given his ability to do tricks with a coin. Kind of the classic magician, he really wasn't using spells for this though, so I am not sure this fits.

Conjuration might be appropriate too considering his failed experiments at creating life.

Transmutation since his skin is Golden, his eyes are hourglasses and he sees everything aging (i.e. changing back to dust)

What do you think?

Feats: War caster and Observant
Background: Charlatan (Skill: Slight of Hand for the coin tricks (no spells needed))
Class: Wizard Enchantment (sleep, friends, charm, command)

The gold skin and hourglass eyes is a curse acquired in game, maybe a Warlock pact with Fistandantilus?

If it helps, Wizards of the Red Robes can only use spells from the schools of Alteration (Transmutation), Conjuration, Divination, Illusion, and Invocation (Evocation).

This is what I was thinking. The schools of magic don't directly map over one to one for specialization of a wizard, but I would bet there are conjurer specialists in the Red Robes

Given that 5e "specialists" aren't locked out of any spell schools, a modern Raistlin could cast any spells he cared to. Later in his career he switched to being a Black Robe anyways (which according to Dragonlance Adventures meant he lost two levels for the "upgrade"!), which totally changed what spells he would/should favor.

In the end, you can assign whatever subclass you feel fits, but he wasn't created with modern subclasses in mind. I mean, you might as well ask what subclass Mordenkainen, Bigby, Rary, or Elminster would have!

Raistlin predates that sourcebook, and many of his signature spells don't fit into any of those schemes. (It's one of the many reasons I dislike how they ended up handling magic in Krynn).

What are Raistlin's signature spells? Fireball, Featherfall (through his staff), Web, Charm Person.

He's a generalist wizard, interested in all parts of magic.

(The correct answer: "He's an AD&D magic-user"! ;))

Cheers,
Merric
