[Whedeon-philes] What if Joss ran a D&D game?

An NPC that you killed in the first game session will show up, alive and maimed in the twelfth.

He will then show up again, perfectly healthy, but with a different name, race, and power in the 20th, and no one will notice.

Then he'll show up in a different campaign with yet another name, race, and power. And in a third campaign.

Structure-wise, virtually all of his series downplay serial narratives in their opening season. Most of the first season episodes in his three series are standalones. In Buffy, there's the Master as a BBEG, but more of the season is about exploring character and setting. His machinations are strictly B and C story lines. In Angel, Wolfram and Hart are ongoing antagonists, but again, each episode features one case (with the exception of Faith's two episodes) and the law firm doesn't seem to be trying to end the world nor is there a long-term scheme to deal with Angel on display yet. There are strikes against him, but nothing more than encounters really. In Firefly, we again have ongoing antagonists (Nishka, the Alliance, the Hands of Blue). But still, every episode is developing character and setting, rather than being about stopping a BBEG's evil schemes to rule/destroy the world. Even Dr. Horrible sets the schemes that successfully make him a big bad in the very last number, while spending the rest of the series focusing on his character and what makes him tick.

In DnD terms? The first few sessions would be one-shots, missions, and dungeon crawls, with only limited screen time for villains.

"The Implied Parents": Giles/Joyce, Angel/Cordelia, Mal/Kaylee

"The Haunted": Angel, River, Book, Mal, Spike
"Perspective Guy" (PC who keeps people grounded and their morale up): Xander, Kaylee (look at Jayne's reaction to her in the sick bay), Cordelia.

hmmm, joss w. eh? well on a firefly feel here is what i would try:

captain of a ship, part merchant part 'priveteer. He and his first mate are long time compatriots from a failed attempt at a coup= to overthrow a tyranical government /empire. they were low level fighters and told to behave, they all wear brown cloaks of protection.

the ship they sail on always seem tohave something wron. not so much that they sink, but they need to find a port ... fast. at the port trouble seems to find them or follow them from another port.

there will be a neutral fighter (jane) that seems to have a bit of a sordid past

Navigater/second mate married to first mate with a bit of an esoteric bent (wash) possible bard

ships go to moman/ ship's engineeer who seem to know how to hold the ship together on bailing twine and spit. (wizard) has a great affinity for strawberries and fine dresses

shephard. priest with a growing mysterious past. repentant assasan?

the doctor would be a mega healing cleric and his mysterious sister would be a monk

the companion would be an aristocrat.

how is that so far?
