Well, really a mixture:
The PC is the son of a humble potter, that's what he thinks.
Really, he is the son of a baron (name not pertinent), promised as a pupil to a devil in exchange for protection from his enemy's assassins. But, through her own spied on the baron, the PC's mother managed to know about this plan the baron's mage and her husband were brooding, the son would be born in five moons from the moment she found out.

So what she does is, she pays a young humble potter and his wife enough money to travel to a more-less distant kingdom and have a comfortable life in exchange of them taking her baby with them. The transferance is made by a bribed cleric, and the couple departs.
The deal with the devil was made that same night, and time passed...
The wife of the baron loved him, and realized that if her husband didn't fullfill the deal, he'd surely be dead. Even in spite of what he had planned to do with their son, she loved him, again, she worked out the pregnacy transferance spell, this time it was easier, the poor young woman wouldn't have been able to cope with having a child. The mother of the PC didn't tell her what'd happen to her son.
When giving birth, in longer time than was expected, the mother died, and the baby was presented to the devil. The baron, with inconmensurable grief, for first time repentant of his action found relief in "at least she didn't have to suffer it, she didn't knew" [
the irony].
And the devil was summoned to be paid back... The deal specified the baron's son [in the idea of later on owning his lands], and the devil not only took the baby, but also cursed the baron, so that he had to seek and capture his own son, to later on fulfill the deal.
The accursed baron has spent years seeking out the truth of what happened, not understanding from the beggining what had happened, how was all that possible.
His agents found, captured, and interrogated his deceased wife's spies.
Every single bit of information was seeked and examinated.
Until, trough a sage, they found a link between the baroness and the poor woman who had given her her own son...
Trough there they found the priest who had transfered the baby, and the general direction of the couple who held his son...
Now, he, assassins, and spies are searching for the PC...

The devil dsn't almost care about time, he is having fun with the father chasing his son, and training as his disciple the other son, and maby, just maby, send eventually his disciple to chase the father and the son.
