DMs. Never challenge your players or their characters in any way. Just continuously tell them how amazing they are never put more than one half-dead goblin in front of them at a time. They couldn’t handle the excitement.

Invest in 4th edition it's the most popular system.

If you are looking for homebrew check out D&Dwiki it has the most widely used and accepted content.

When invited to a home game it's expected for you to dress as closely to the vision of your character. It helps set the mood and gives the best role playing experience.

If someone at the table has a rule wrong, call them out and don't back down, especially if it is the DM.

Remember the DM is there for your enjoyment. If the DM tries to rule in a way you don't like remind them of this fact.

After you run a few games, homebrew your own campaign. Make sure the 150-300 pages of house rules are bound in hardcover- at least for yourself- and get some copies to your players. Insist they read them all.

No, there won’t be a written test, but as DM, you’ll easily be able to man the players into situations where mastery of the house rules will be important. Maybe even life or death…

NOTE: while I have been known to hand out house rule “bibles or campaign setting overviews, most were brief- typically no more than 5 pages. The biggest I ever did was 10+, but that was for a RIFTS campaign, and most of it was devoted to a list of OCCs & RCCs allowed for play, with a 1-2 sentence descriptor and sourcebook page number.
