I have been to a few of the Winter Fantasy conventions when they were in Chicago. I think a central location is good in general, with all due respect to our east coast members.
Possibly Gen Con will still have a heavy emphasis on D&D, but the D&D Experience might well just focus on D&D and other D20 games. It does seem that WotC wants to have that event as the place for announcements.
Based on what I have seen of WotC's catalogue for next year, at most I would expect an announcement of 4E being released. My hope is that WotC would do extensive play testing of 4E before releasing it.
