Would anyone prefer spellcasting to stay as it is?

I prefer the current system as well.
Being able to spam cast every round takes much of the awe away from spellcasters, imo.

Leave the mana for the video games.

No I would like to see a change. The current model encourages the blast and rest party mode. Currently magic users can decisvely turn a couple of battles and then they are out of useful combat spells. At that point the party becomes reluctant to preoceed further until the magic users rest.

I suspect the likely scenario will be the mage gets a basic attack at will based on reserved feats or similar mechanism and that works as a range touch attack and is as effective as missile weapons (e.g. 1d6 or 1d8 damage) and they have recoverable resources that can enhance this effect (or feats). This effect can be used pretty much at will

In addition they probalbly will get some spells that will work similar to the book of the nine swords manouvers and are recoverable between encounters. Buffs and single target save or die spells would be canditated for this.

Then they may through in a few vancian major spells that alter space time and reality on a per day limited usage. Area clearance spells, teleports, wish and so forth may fall in to that category.

Personally I would like if they made a lot of spells in to rituals, warding spells and scrying, opening planar gates and that kind of stuff should be rituals and not something that can be done in a 6 second incantation.

I'm a bit worried that 20% of spellcasting PCs being classic D&D magic may be a bit too little...

50% would make me a bit happier. Attrition should be a valuable tactic for the DM, every encounter shouldn't need to be life-threatening.

Would I prefer spellcasting to stay as it is? I assume the OP means the current Vancian system found in 3e.

No. I want something different.

Change is good.
I've never played a wizard more than a one-off because of the "Vancian" magic system. I prefer a more free flowing system.

I'd like to see a change in the system.

I've never played a pure spellcaster in 3.0/3.5, the reason being that I didn't feel comfortable playing a character that could become "useless" after all spells were cast.

I'm looking forward to seeing the changes.

Keep Vancian Casting

D&D is the flagship fantasy RPG yet it has the worst magic system. The Vancian system has got to go the way of THAC0 and other outdated and unintuitive mechanics.

I'd like to see something different.

What other systems (magic system name, short description, and website/book name) do y'all prefer?

Our group is playtesting a new Mage class I came up with: Mage class
In short:
-forces the character to specialize, but compensates for that by not forcing you to prepare your spells
-it uses spell points, but gives more spell points than the equivalent specialist wizard at low levels and fewer at high levels.

I wish I could have changed it more, but I wanted to keep it somewhat familiar for my players.
