Your 5 favourite movies... and why?

Five of my favorite movies (though not necessarily my five favorite movies of all time):

Breaker Morant - Boer War court martial drama. Australian soldiers hung out to dry by a British government to make peace with the Boers' German backers yet their barrister (picked to be incompetent) puts up a spirited defense. Based on a true story and gripping.

Blade Runner - immersive in its vision of a dark future, brilliant ending, one of the few movies better than the book on which it is based.

A Christmas Story - brilliant adaptation of a funny book, Darren McGavin is hysterical as the Old Man, who works in obscenities as other artists work in oils.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - I don't see how the Two Towers is being rated as the best of the 3 movies when this one clearly is ;)
Of the three movies in the trilogy, I believe this one best captures the feel of the first book as well as inspires the desire to form an adventuring party to head out into the wilderness

The Opening of Misty Beethoven - Yes, it's vintage porn but hear me out. This was made back when porn movies had aspirations and were written with an actual story, character development, and humor. For those of you who are adults and are open to smut, I recommend it without reservation. A very interesting take on Shaw's Pygmalion.

Again, a tough choice, so I'm going to pick a few of the fun strange ones.

Guilty as Charged.

Rod Steiger provides a great send up of the vigilante Death Wish/Lethal Weapon/Die Hard style comic book vengence movie.

The Black Hole

Outstanding piece of Disney SciFi cheese. V.I.N.Cent vs Maximilian battle alone is worth watching the whole movie.

Fifty Fifty
Great Buddy-buddy mercenary action flick movie.

The Last Starfighter

Sci Fi adventure story brought down to Earth while reaching for the stars.

Children of the Revolution
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoP2rrGFEms
The story of the Australian Communist Party, and her love child.

In no particular order, and subject to change without notice. My man Godfrey. One of the best screwball comedies ever. Powell and Loy at their best. (Although The Good Fairy and several with Cary Grant are up there.) Monty Python and the Holy Grail. A combination of screwball comedy, the middle ages and Arthurian fantasy. What more could you want? Casablanca. It's just plain a classic. In a category all it's own. Forbidden Planet. This is what we should have been seeing in the '70s and up. It set the standard. Star Trek II. Khaaaaaaannn!

There are plenty of movies I really like, so I'll concentrate on the ones I'Ve watched more than twice - something I very, very rarely do.

1. Bladerunner: My all-time favorite. I was fascinated by it from the first minute and I still cannot tell what kind of movie it's supposed to be. It also lead me to discover the works of Philip K. Dick and I've read every novel by him, since. It even caused me to watch plenty of other movies (many of them bad) just because one of the actors from Bladerunner was in it!

2. Alien: There's no movie I've watched as often as this one (about two to three dozen times!). It was such a revelation compared to every other movie or TV show set in space I had every seen before. It really blew my mind and changed my expectations forever. And H.R. Giger's designs affected me deeply.

3. Donnie Darko: A strange movie with a great soundtrack. I never mind watching it again, especially since it takes several viewings to get everything. It was the first time I saw the Gyllenhalls in a movie, and Patrick Swayze is probably playing his best role ever.

4. & 5. Crash & Babel: Two movies that I feel are very similar. Both are dramas featuring several groups of people whose lifes clash or get linked in unexpected ways. Both movies don't seem to pass judgement and both make me sad about the state of our world. They're representative of the kind of movies I enjoy watching as a counter-balance to my usual Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror fare and they mostly stand out because I've watched them more often than others, often by accident (when zapping).

Boondock Saints: A movie about "two ordinary people put in extraordinary situation(s) and just happen to come out on top." Also Willem Dafoe in drag.

Roadhouse: Perhaps THE quintessential 80's movie, as it contains romance, drama, suspense, action, comedy, and Patrick Swayze.

The Three Musketeers (Disney) - You can't play D&D and not like this version of the Musketeers. Because Charlie Sheen, Keifer Sutherland, Oliver Platt and Tim Curry are amazing. There's also a young Robin... er, Chris O'Donnell.

Hmm ...

Dead Man - Johhny Depp, a Western where nobody rides a horse, nobody gets shot and nobody dies.

Snatch - Guy Ritchie can make some interesting stuff, I tell you wut. Amazing dialogue, funny as hell and a great story.

Conan the Barbarian (Arnold version) - Do I really need to explain this one?

The Usual Suspects - It never gets old. It weaves quite the web and truly does surprise at the end.

No Country for Old Men - I'm a huge McCarthy fan and, while the book is still better, this movie comes really, really close to being as good as the book.

I could go on and on about favorite movies and if you asked me tomorrow the list would probably be different. Just the way it be, mon.

Currently these would be the top 5 - however they change periodically

1 Master & Commander - I like epic sea pictures, plus the carnage when the ships are firing on each other is spectacular

2 John Carpenter's The Thing - Suspense and creepiness done right

3 Captain America - He's the best superhero ever and I liked this origin story.

4 Young Frankenstein/Blazing Saddles - Still funny, and Gene Wilder's acting is always top notch in a Mel Brooks Film.

5 Nate & Hayes - The first sea/pirate movie that I really watched - started my whole like for the genre.

A Wicked Kendragon
Hard Boiled. A Hong Kong action movie from 1992. Some of the greatest action scenes ever filmed. The hospital shootout especially is stunning.

Il Mio Nome è Nessuno (My Name is Nobody). Quirky and funny 1973 western starring Henry Fonda and Terence Hill, with Tonino Valerii and Sergio Leone co-directing. That's reason enough to see it. But then it also has a plot that nearly breaks the fourth wall in its musings about the cowboy age (and movies).

In a Lonely Place. Film noir excellence from 1950. A writer played by Bogart is suspected of being a murderer, mainly because his behaviour places him in a strange light. But the movie isn't really about the murder, it's about personal chemistry.

Samurai Fiction. A 1998 black and white samurai comedy with a rocking soundtrack.

My Mighty Princess. A 2008 slice of life martial arts romance revenge superhero comedy from South Korea. Yeah.
