Your Favorite War Movies...

Knightfall

World of Kulan DM
Okay, I don't watch many war movies but I have to vote for the following:

Braveheart
Last of the Mohicans
M.A.S.H.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
North & South (mini-series)
Platoon
Saving Private Ryan (intense)
The Hunt for Red October (would this count?)
Troy

Cheers!

Many of my favorites have been listed. Additionally:

All Quiet on the Western Front The 1930 original, not the TV remake.

Run Silent, Run Deep

Cold Mountain I only just recently saw this for the first time, and was very surprised; it's one of the best American Civil War movies I've seen.

Breaker Morant

Force 10 from Navarone

Carl

Davek

First Post
A Bridge too Far
Saving Private Ryan
Kelly's Heros
Wild Geese (more of a merc movie but real good low intesntiy combat)

Patton

The Great Raid

Braveheart

Glory

Full Metal Jacket

Casualties of War

Band of Brothers

Tora, Tora, Tora

Enemy at the Gates

To name a few... I am sure I leave many off that list that I'll think of later!

Men of Harlech
Modern Words used by Regimental Band
The Royal Regiment of Wales' Band singing "Men of Harlech" on the 120th anniversary of the battle of Rorke's Drift (2.68MB) This was recorded in the church at Rorke's Drift and if you listen carefully, you can hear the emotion that this rendition evoked.

Tongues of fire on Idris flaring,
news of foe-men near declaring,
to heroic deeds of daring,
call you Harlech men

Groans of wounded peasants drying,
wails of wives and children flying,
for the distant succour crying,
call you Harlech men.

Shall the voice of wailing,
now be unavailing,
You to rouse who never yet
in battles hour were failing,

His our answer crowds down pouring
swift as winter torrents roaring,
Not in vain the voice imploring,
calls on Harlech men

Loud the martial pipes are sounding
every manly heart is bounding
As our trusted chief surrounding,
march we Harlech men.

Short the sleep the foe is taking,
ere the morrows morn is breaking,
They shall have a rude awakening,
roused by Harlech men.

Mothers cease your weeping,
calm may be your sleeping,
you and yours in safety now
the Harlech men are keeping,

ere the sun is high in heaven
they you fear by panic riven
shall like frightened sheep be driven,
far by Harlech men.[/sblock]

Also, have to throw knocks at Enemy at the Gates. The depictions of the siege of Stalingrad was awesome, the wreckage, the ruin, the scope.
billd91 already mentioned it, but anyone interested in realistic war movies should see Stalingrad. It kicks Enemy at the Gates to the curb, frankly (Rachel Weisz aside, of course ;) ).

I enjoyed Enemy at the Gates as well, just to put my 2-cents in. But Stalingrad was far more evocative and, ultimately, bleak. Of course, Stalingrad focuses exclusively on the Germans and is a VERY unromantic portrayal of the campaign.

So, Stalingrad had something romantic???

Some fine movies already mentioned.
- Die Brücke/ The Bridge (Some youth are left to guard a valueless bridge and us-soldiers come by. Very depressing).
- Sorbibor (more a KZ-movie, but the big escape was mentioned. I wept, when the escape startet and the people ran over the mine-field (sob)).
- Return of the King
- From Here To Eternity (loved it when I was younger, don't know, if I still would)
- Captain Hornblower
- The Last Valley (more about the effect a war got on the people. And one of the few movies on the 30years war)
- Der Untergang/ The Downfall (not sure, if this counts)
