The cooled saline solution preserves the brain and organs without bursting cell walls as actually freezing the bodies would do. It's interesting, but definitely weird. I know that doctors relatively routinely start and stop hearts for surgery, but the description of how this works is undeniable creepy - which is what the reporter apparently intended, since they're really not "zombie dogs" at all.

But it is weird. I wouldn't want it done to me.

I'm certain this is for real. As The_Universe says, this prevents the cell damage of actual freezing. This wouldn't work for long-term preservation but I think it's awesome for certain rare cases.

Of course I have my doubts about this:

"Plans to test the technique on humans should be realised within a year, according to the Safar Centre."

I'm not volunteering. :)
