This week’s article looks at RPG crowdfunding projects that end between October 3rd to 12th. This sampling includes projects from Monte Cook Games, Evil Hat Productions, Kobold Press, Coyote & Crow, Roll & Play Press, and more.
Dark Places & Demogorgons is a great RPG of 80s kids fighting horrors in their hometown. Currently it uses Survive This!!, an old school game engine, but the next version is for Old-School Essentials (D&D Basic/D&D Expert). Eric Bloat, the creator of DP&D, was kind enough to talk to me about his new project coming to Kickstarter in October.
This is my hundredth RPG Print News and everything is fantasy this week. That is both profound and really not related to anyone’s real life in any meaningful way. So I included a Heward’s Handy Haversack (only magical on Oerth) made of Silver Dragon scales. D&D falls in love, and Pathfinder 2nd Edition goes Special Edition with a previous title. Modiphius has more Conan - Adventures in an Age...
This week I look at RPG crowdfunding projects that end between September 20th and October 3rd. Lot’s of 5e and related systems this week, but they produce some great options.
One of the most fascinating things to come out of the OSR for me is the concept of “the funnel”. These adventures encourage players to make multiple low-level characters that are meant to be folded, stapled and generally maligned by the adventure. It’s a tribute to the lethality of older materials that keeps the player in the game without having to wait around for them to make a new character...
D&D gets nothing this week. I’m as surprised as you are. However, Dungeon Crawl Classics gets a new adventure and Traveller gets three new adventures that work with the Mercenary Box Set. Dyson also has magic swords for your d20 fantasy. More adventures: a train assault for Achtung! Cthulhu 2d20 and a film crew stalked by TerrorHog for Crawlspace. The late 80s are back also with support for...
D&D gets more adventures and World War 2 added in, Basic D&D/Old-School Essentials gets a book of hirelings, and the OSR gets more adventures as well. You can now get your own TARDIS in the Doctor Who - The Roleplaying Game Collector's Edition (Second Edition). There are also RPGs about hobbits returning from fighting the dark lord, humanoid animals in a post-holocaust world, and hardboiled...
Why attend Gen Con? From time to time, that question arises from gaming fans that have yet to attend. Many of the replies attempt to recreate the dimension of the convention, it’s impressively large, or touch on the excitement that gathering a stadium’s worth of gamers in one place generates. Because the scope of the convention (held across four days in a convention center, a football stadium...
This week’s RPG crowdfunding projects end between August 27 and September 15. This week is a light sampling of what’s available. While I include some RPG zines, the majority can be found here on Kickstarters’s 2022 RPG Zine Quest.
The 90s are back with both Rifts and Vampire the Masquerade core rulebooks in print. D&D gets all the adventures of course and the most expensive GM screen I’ve ever seen. Call of Cthulhu gets an updated starter set. And Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG gets supplements. Finally, The Expanse Roleplaying Game goes beyond the ring and into whole new worlds of adventure.
This week’s RPG crowdfunding campaigns end between August 19 and September 6. While this is only a sampling of what’s available, it’s worth calling out that Kickstarters’s 2022 RPG Zine Quest is live with a number of zines available. For this article, I pulled some items from ZQ and some non-zines to give an idea of the available options. In addition, this week’s list has a subtle theme...
This week’s column looks at RPG crowdfunding projects that end between August 17th and September 19th. As with last week’s article, I did not have the bandwidth to dive into Kickstarter's 2022 RPG Zine Quest event. However, I can provide that link and go one further with this Zine Quest 4 Stats Google Sheet (not mine, by the by) which shows this year’s zines.
This week, I look at RPG crowdfunding projects that end between August 4th and 19th. Why such a tight timeframe? Because I’m headed to Gen Con and deadlines loom. This is a sampling of what’s available, but does not delve into Kickstarters’s 2022 RPG Zine Quest event. Moving from its February timeframe for one year, this event is going head-to-head with Gen Con for coverage, which limits some...
D&D gets a special cover setting along with a DMless card driven adventure. Pathfinder 2nd Edition gets a new class. GURPS 4E and The Fantasy Trip get a setting and monsters and two small adventures respectively. G.I. JOE RPG arrives with two adventures and yes you do make your own Joe. Finally, Hunter the Reckoning is back in what looks to be a fifth edition, there is a new fantasy RPG, and...
This week, I look at RPG crowdfunding projects ending between August 1st to 18th. This sampling includes games crowdfunding on Kickstarter and Backerkit. These are running around the Gen Con timeframe. As the San Diego Comic Con of roleplaying games, Gen Con takes up space on the calendar so it’s always interesting to see its impact on RPGs around this time.
OSR
Death in Space is a beautiful digest sized holographic hardcover RPG in brilliant yellow and darkest black with splashes of other color and with two ribbons, one red and one black. Details, rules, and random table sprawl from end paper to end paper and fill the pages in between. Christian Plogfors and Carl Niblaeus were kind enough to talk to us about this mutating, decaying, war-scarred RPG...

With The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977, Wizards is going back to the roots of the game, presenting material other histories have not.
Put the players within spitting distance of the fall of House Atreides and the rise of Muad’Dib.
For its first book of D&D's 50th anniversary year, Wizards is going big with a multiverse-spanning, multiverse-threatening adventure where players will face off against one of the game’s most legendary villains.
A great monster book on its own but also useful as a supplemental guide to pre-existing fantasy worlds.
