Expensive Movie Nights

My local equivalent is Chunky's Cinema Pub. They take seats out of Lincoln Town Cars, and have a pretty full menu, and serve beer - so, a lot like a drive-in, without the hassle and with a better audio system.

That sounds pretty cool. I miss drive-in movies. I still remember seeing Superman and the first set of Star Wars movies sitting on the roof of my dad's van.

Some of the drive-throughs here in Texas used to show soft core porn/hard R sex romps. (Same difference to a teenage boy.) I'm surprised there were not more car accidents along a certain stretch of Hwy 183.

And, of course, the guy who changed the marquee couldn't spell: "Hecules" and "Fists of Furry" were 2 of my faves...

I've never seen a drive-in, but I gotta admit I simply don't see the appeal at all! My car's the last place I want to sit and watch a film.

Yeah, I don't share a desire for privacy when watching a movie on the big screen. In fact, part of the fun is the shared experience. Still, I guess if you've grown up with that as a cultural custom, it's probably equally hard to understand why others don't get it.

Drive ins are fun with kids or a group. The kids can run around when they get bored with the movie so I don't have to be the quiet police. (Mine are 4 and 6 so this is important) For groups, you can chat with your friends during the show and you're far enough from your neighbors that it doesn't bother them. Lots of folks bring lawn chairs or blankets rather than sit in their cars. It can be more of a party than a show. There are still a couple within driving distance here.

..A lot of the time, we'd go to the drive in with large groups, i.e. 15-20 people, families, kids..etc. Back in the day, it was $5-$7 per car load, around $10 for a double feature, so it saved a lot of money. Vans were a big deal back then, so you could fit a bunch of people in them.
..There was a playground up front where all the kids went while the adults socialized. When the lights dimmed, there was a catchy little song that encouraged you to buy popcorn. When it came on, all the little kids scurried back to their cars. They then played a cartoon feature before the movie started.
..Everyone brought something, kind of like a potluck. The one we went to also had grills near the backrow so you could bring food and grill out on it. It was like a big picnic at night or maybe a tailgate before a sporting event. It was much more than just you watching a movie.
..Warm summer nights, under the stars, a cool breeze blowing through..all while watching a movie from the top of my dad's van with my brothers and my friends. Good memories.

...Note that this was prior to VCR's becoming a common household thing.

Our local chain cinema charges the following prices for ticket (all in Euro):

7.50 - 8.00 (on weekends) + 0.50/1.00/1.50 (films longer than 120/140/160 minutes) +3.00 (3D) + 1.50 for loge.

Visiting the cinema with my wife sets us back 19.00 Euro typically due to the kind of films we both want to see.

Popcorn and softdrinks is a no-go for me at the movie's. Until about 30 yeas ago it was actually forbidden to consume something in the theater.
