D&D 5E [IC] Against the Slavelords

Evendur catches a glance of a set of stairs back into the underground room that the bear is walking into. The poorly dressed man removes the bears chain around one of its' lower legs and it moves into a open cage near the stairs. Glancing up he spots a wooden door that the stairs must lead to on the other side of the large room behind one of the sets of blenches.

Brak Blood-Bear, 5th Level Barbarian

Dimly looking at Levanna and Alegast, Brak said, "I'll be back."

The gladiator marched across the room to the gathering of warriors. Rapping Grimblades on the breastplate, he said, "I hear you're fightin' BloodPig tonight, Grimblades. What'll it take for you to let Brak Blood-Bear take your place? It's a matter of honor."

The man, along with his men, glance over at Brak and replies with a bit of an northern accent "As it is with me. Besides I have already paid the entrance fee and placed bets on my victory... why should I care about your 'honor'"

The barbarian notices that all the men in the group have a tattoo of a fist holding many arrows on their necks (similar to the symbol on the belt that Adreek the owner of the Broken Rutter was wearing except that their is no "eye" in the middle).

Evendur moves around a bit, making sure that for at least a little while he will be able to observe the door.

[section]The color drained from Levanna's cheeks as she watched the bear finish off the man in the pit. She winced and wanted to tear her eyes away, but they remained locked on the bloody spectacle. She felt an obligation that she could not explain to watch. As if turning away from his death that she was complicit in would be a further disservice to the man. A chill swept up her spine as the bear stomped the life out of him and his cries for mercy were replaced with the roaring approval of the crowd.

She turned back to Marcus and Brother Kost. If she would not save this man, she could at least try to ensure his death meant a little more than merely being fodder for the amusement of a bloodthirsty crowd. They had come here for information that would help put an end to these despicable practices.

"Forgive me, though I am new to all of this... I may be interested in purchasing a slave" she said, leaving out the fact that she would free such a slave immediately after purchase. "I must confess that, of the slave trade, I know only tales that have reached my homeland. There it is whispered that the 'Slavelords' are the ones in control of such things. Is this so? 'Slavelords' is such a vague term."

With another glance toward the pit, she added "and I believe I would use a more gentle hand at discipline..."

Tirion eyed the odd behavior of the bear, but had to look away as the killing blows fell. He found he had no words for Marcus. This was a different world to the young noble, where life was cheap with little meaning.

“Excuse me a moment, my lord,” Tirion told Marcus.

The big cleric moved to the edge of the pit and jumped down onto the bloody sand. He walked over to the mangled body and knelt beside it. Gently he closed the man’s eyes, saying a few quiet prayers for the soul’s journey to the next life.

“Unlock the shackles,” Tirion said firmly to the pit tenders when they emerged to remove the body and rake down new sand. HE tapped into the power of Pelor and his eyes glowed ominously, dangerously.

Brak Blood-Bear, 5th Level Barbarian

OOC: Using inspiration, I rolled a 21 in the OOC thread.

Brak didn't notice Tirion's bold move; he was fully focused on Grimblades. His grey eyes dimmed a little, all emotion had drained from them. In place of emotion, a cold, calculating expression had set up shop on the gladiator's face. Slowly appraising Grimblades, Brak crossed his arm and said, "I fought in the Northern Kingdom's pits for over 30 years. I earned my reputation there, these hands have defeated more than 300 men and beasts and they won't be stopping now, not in this piss pot and not to the likes of Bloodboar. It's your choice whether my path to Bloodboar goes through you or around you... doesn't matter to me how many bodies I have to leave in my wake. If it's about the money, I'll give you half my winnings from beating Bloodboar tonight."

The pit master looks around and starts sweating even more then he was before, saying “Ah we don’t have slaves here in Elreed… we bes a free city and all…” He then looks at Brother Kost, maybe for guidance or maybe because he is afraid of the monks reaction.

The monk raises an eyebrow and with a slight smile says “Our friend Dregg is correct my lady. Slavery is outlawed in all the free cities of the Wild Coast. One should choice their words carefully with regards to whom they are speaking with when it comes to these matters. But I understand someone new to trade not knowing this. I am a simply monk myself and no trader, but if you would like I could guide you to certain… sellers of goods that might be able to point you in the correct direction…

The guards outside the pit are shocked by the actions of the priest and simply stare down with confusion. The shabby dressed man stares at Tirion with open fear and mutters “I don’t have nos keys master… eyes just feeds Goregell and makes sures his cage is clean…

About then a leather clad female from inside the room where the cage is located steps into view. She is an athletic and attractive blonde wearing black leather armor and carrying a number of daggers and a short sword on her belt. She also has a whip in one hand but hearing the priest speak she takes a step back, a look of worry crossing her face. She glances up at the guards on the pits edge and says “Now, now… let’s not do anything hasty here. Goregell is all calm now as he has made his kill. You are likely to get him all riled up again and that could be dangerous…

While the leader (the one Brak is addressing) seems impressed with the barbarian he holds his ground and does not flinch. The rest of his men however all take a collective step back and their hands move towards their weapons…

Grimblades smiles and says “I would not normally do this but you speak with some confidence and I am curious to see how you will fair against the mad dwarf… Agreed, you may fight him first. Afterwards, we will talk…

About then the rest of the group and the crowd notices Tirion’s action as they are causing a bit of a stir. First the crowd around the pits seems to go quiet, no one seems to be sure of what is going on. The monk, Brother Kost, looks down at the priest and then over at Levanna saying “You came in with that man… may I ask what is he doing?” The pit master moans and looks like he is going to run and hide somewhere. The guards along the pit draw their weapons but look over at the pit master for direction. Grimblades and his men glance over and he says “Well, it appears there may be some additional entertainment before you face Bloodboar…” but it appears he has no intention of interfering with what is happening.

[section]Levanna blinked and tilted her head quizzically. She had purposefully been trying to put the pit out of her mind. "What who is doing?" she asked, turning in the direction the monk was looking.

Inwardly she groaned and prepared for a possible confrontation. But as Levanna watched Tirion's actions, she saw that he was performing a rite of some sort over the corpse. She also had to admire the courage it took to jump in the pit alone like that.

Though she was not sure what the cleric intended to do, she could at least try to cover for him.

Thinking quickly, Levanna turned back to Brother Kost. "Oh don't mind him. He is merely performing last rites for the deceased. He is a man of the cloth you see. And as you know, they take their obligations to their gods very seriously. I assure you he means no harm," she said, gesturing towards the pit guards, but addresses the pit master and the monk. "Would you please allow him to remove the corpse from the sands?"

"Would you please allow him to remove the corpse from the sands?"

The monk seems to consider this for just a moment but then nods his head. Looking at the pit master he says "It seems like only the proper thing to do, don't you agree Dregg?"

The pit master almost passes out from obvious fear and nods his head quickly. Shouting down to the female in the pit he yells "Unchain the body Evatte and be quick about it... we must set up for the new fight." Too the crowd he yells "Nothing to worry about folks, the next bout will being shortly..."

The woman with the whip tries to hide a sneer at Tirion but hides it poorly. She quickly tries to cover it and says "Of course my lord. Right away my lord..." and heads over to the corpse and quickly unchains it with a key from around her belt. She then steps back and watches the priest.

Up above Grimeblades seems disappointed but then shrugs his shoulder. Looking to Brek he says "I look forward to your match..."

Up above Brother Kost says to Levanna, in hushed tones "Now about this other matter... this is not the place to discuss such delicate matters. I would be happy to escort you to somewhere more private where their are less prying ears..."
