“Stirges!” Fhanna announced to the others. “Dirty little bloodsuckers!” She shook gore off her spearhead and surveyed the battle. There was a stirge within reach harassing Drayvin, but three others were going after the horses.


The redheaded dwarf gestured and muttered the words of a spell, waggling her fingers toward the stirges closing in on the horses.

Caius Aurelius, Blessed Penitent

Caius watches his mark splatter and fall into the swamp but has no time to celebrate before one of the horses screams behind him. He hurries in front of the beast and grabs it by the reins, stroking its face reassuringly with the upper limb of his bow. Don't you run now, or I'll be trampled for damn sure! he silently wills it to be still.

In Caius's periphery he sees the source of the horse's distress: another of the bloodsuckers is feeding greedily upon its flank and two more move in to feast. The paladin snarls in frustration, turning his pearly gaze on his clearest target. He draws another arrow back to his chin and prays, "Amenthia, guide these feathered fletchings."

The shaft flies unerringly in such close proximity and, having lost so little momentum before impact, drives the monster by its razor-sharp proboscis several feet back. A soft thnk accompanies the arrowhead's meeting with a tree limb sticking out of the swamp but the vile thing it's impaled makes no sound.

Caius shouts across the swamp, "Fhanna what do you know of stirges?"

[section]Events continue to unfold in a rapid pace. Seros steps forth and draws his sword. Sylvain takes another swipe at an already fallen stirge, and makes sure it is doubly dead. Fhanna turns around and directs her attention towards the group of creatures by the horses. After a few choice words, all three stirges fall asleep and land in the bog accompanied by satisfying thwaps as they fall from the air. Back in the rear, Drayvin continues his assault on the stirge behind the wagon. Another blow, this time a touch more well-placed, sends the stirge's now lifeless body through the air and back into the muck and mire. Caius quickly and confidently steadies the horse, and then even faster, draws, knocks, releases, and kills one of the now sleeping stirges.

All is well and good, except for the fact that another batch of the flying insectoids come barreling in from all directions. The flock has become a storm!

"Fhanna what do you know of stirges?" Caius calls.

“Wee dirty bloodsuckers!” the dwarf yelled back. “Dunnae let ‘em grab ye! They’ll suck yuir blood. An’ they’re filthy wi’ disease!”

Fhanna looked grateful as the last of the stirges fell to her sleep spell…

...until another half dozen of the bloodsuckers appeared.

“An’ they’re often in bluidy packs,” the dwarf grumbled, gripping her longspear. She waded in front of Sylvain to jab her spear at another of the beasties.

[section]~ As the Stirges in front of him dropped rather than make a meal of poor Giselda, Seros flipped a quick salute Fhanna's way for her assistance, though his cheer was short lived: more of the bitey bastards came swarming out of the marsh.

" They just keep coming, don't they!" he lamented angrily, stepping around the slumbering monsters and brandishing his blade at the newcomers. He meant to impose his body between the horses and the new stirges approaching from the east, prepped to hewer the first one that made the mistake of thinking he was a meal.

" Forth! Firecast, guide us!" Seros prayed with fervor, the Longsword still flipped up into the high guard and bobbing about in his controlled movements, that the stirges would be less awares of where the cut came from.

If mosquitos even understood the finer arts of dueling, that was. ~[/section]

"By St. Irge, patron saint of annoying things, is the whole swamp their temple? Lets go make some sacrifices of them"
Sheathing his Masterwork Sword Sylvain draws his Bow and lets loose at a Stirge out in the swamp, trusting Fhana and Drayvin to make good offerings of their insects and the might of the big men near the wagon to deal with the sleepers and their would be rescuers. Squinting, he reckons the arrow hit the stirge and possibly drew blood from the nose.

Caius eyes another stirge warily as it bobs and weaves from the swamp and over the road. Given Fhanna's warnings, he finds himself grateful to be holding a bow and keeping at a distance. He fires at the oversized mosquito but it continues to move erratically through the air and dodges his arrow. The swamp greedily swallows the projectile.
