Gary Gygax health update

As some of you may (or may not) know, Gary dropped me a line a couple of weeks ago indicating that he was not well and that we shouldn't be alarmed if he stopped posting here for a while.

I am happy to report that I got another message from Gary today and it sounds like he's doing much better. He's given permission to pass along the following:

Dear Family, Friends & Fellow Gamers,

Thank you all for your emails and prayers! The Spirit of Jehovah God and Hand of Our Lord Jesus Christ have been active on my behalf. The gift of creative writing comes from Heaven, and it seems that there is still some work I can do here. Please keep on remembering me when you pray, as I can use all the help I can get.

As you likely know I had a mild stroke on April 1st—more fool me… After I sent out the email about a general problem, I was soon hooked up with a doctor, a neurologist, in fact, thanks to a gaming comrade. In telephone discussion it was generally confirmed that what I feared had happened, a stroke, was the case. As I has no primary care physician here, it was urged that I travel to see the Good Doctor who was advising me, as time was important, and getting local care appointments might take three or more weeks.

On the 5th we got ready for the trip. Next day wife Gail, daughter Elise, son Alex and I set off on a long drive. On the 7th I saw the neurologist, had an MRI and MAR, plus an ultra-sound of my heart. The following day I passed on having an angiogram, opted instead for taking a blood thinner along with medicine to control my high blood pressure. On Saturday son Luke and his wife Bouchra drove in from Virginia to see me. Son Ernie, daughters Heidi and Cindy, kept in touch via phone, as they couldn't be there with us. We spent Saturday together, then journeyed home on Easter Sunday.

So I am feeling pretty well now, and I have regained most of my coordination. I will need to be under a doctor’s care for some time. It goes without saying that I will be on a diet to lose the excess weight I’ve put on the last 10 years, and the beloved habit of smoking needs be ended. The sole compensation is that not only is my liver in excellent condition, but I am to have two glasses of wine daily for the sake of my cardio-vascular system. Gail will see that I toe the line, thank goodness, and Alex will also be a Jiminy Cricket in regards diet and smoking.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that as did Larry Elmore, I too suffer from sleep apnea, so soon I’ll have to go and have a sleep study done, get the machine to treat that problem.

I should be able to resume creative efforts soon, but I will have to cut back on the time spent working. Likely that will mean I will have to reduce the amount of correspondence and board posting so as to keep up with design obligations. Don’t be offended if I fail to respond to individual messages.

As important to me as the work is gaming, and I am planning on resumption of the campaign here on the 23rd of this month.

Don’t hesitate to pass this along to anyone who is interested in the matter.

God bless you all,

Gary

Pass on to Gary the study is a pain in the rear but the machine works wonders and really impoves the way that you sleep.

From a fellow sleep apnea person...

We're glad to hear you're doing better, Gary. My father went through a similar ordeal last year. He has since lost a lot of weight and has found that the quality of his life has drastically improved. He didn't realize what he was missing until he got it back. I hope you find similar wonderful silver linings over the next few motnhs and years.
