Archer Build

I would go all out fighter for at least 3 levels

Never take an odd number of fighter levels.

You could do a fairly simple, but still quite effective Human Ranger 2/Fighter 4/Order of the Bow Initiate

This is probably your best bet. There is something to be said for builds that are both effective and not overly complicated. Less classes means you'll get your abilities quicker and if your DM is flaky on multiclassing and PrC's, you are more likely to get the thumbs up from him. Good call Thanee.

I do like archer builds with Rogue levels. More skills, some sneak attack, and evasion are always nice.

Funnily the Eldritch Knight is a good archer build: You have all spells to your disposal, your BAB is not bad (3 points worse than a pure fightertype), you'll have two bonus feats (enough for most archer builds) and if you're out of arrows, start throwing fireballs ;)

Yes, I have found exactly this. EK's are good archers. In the game in which I play one, he is the most reliable damage dealer in the party. I don't miss the drop in BAB at all. But 6th level is just a little too early for akchf. At 6th level, I'd probably go some fighter/rogue mix, 3/3 maybe, hoping to pick up weapon Specialisation next level.

Archer (assume rogue start)
1. Point Blank shot
H. Precise Shot
F1. Weapon Focus (longbow)
F2. Rapid Shot
3. Iron Will (your Will save will suck otherwise)
6. ?? (perhaps Lightning Reflexes to increase the use of Evasion, or Improved Initiative)
> F4. Weapon Specialisation (longbow)

Your BAB is one less, but you deal +2d6 damage on a sneak attack. Soon your spell casting buddy should be casting greater invisibility on you in battle

Up to 6th level, using the standard 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 spread:

Race: Wood Elf

S: 14 (16)
D: 15 (17)
C: 12 (10)
I: 13 (11)
W: 10
Ch: 8 (6)

1: Ftr: Point Blank Shot, Weapon Focus (longbow) [Ftr]
2: Ftr: Rapid Shot [Ftr]
3: Ftr: Precise Shot
4: Ftr: Weapon Specialization (longbow) [Ftr]
5: Wiz: Scribe Scroll [Wiz]
6: Wiz: Far Shot

Beyond 6th level:

7: OotBI
8: OotBI
9: OotBI: Manyshot
10: OotBI: Greater Weapon Focus (longbow) [OotBI]
11: AA
12: AA: Greater Manyshot (found in the XPH)
13: AA
14: AA
15: AA: Improved Rapid Shot
16: AA
17: AA
18: AA: Improved Precise Shot
19: AA
20: AA

Ouch, 10 Con will hurt in the long run.

green slime: Yeah, level6 will be pretty weak for the EK build, but you're a pretty valid mage with good hitpoints at that time... ;)

The bow will nearly always stay your secondary weapon. Cast haste first every combat.

Archer vs. Melee

Archers can be highly effective in a party. Primarily because if you kill a melee enemy at range, you don't get injured. Secondarily, because you always get a full attack, unlike the melee type that has to spend one or more rounds moving into range of the enemy. The third reason archers are effective (often overlooked) is that there are so many ranged combat feats that you can spend all of your feats on archery; Unlike the melee fighter who can not spend all of his feats on a single weapon.

The two best base classes for an archer are pretty obvious: Fighter and Ranger. Fighter because of the feats. Ranger because you get a couple of archery feats, but more importantly you get lots of skill points and other special abilities to make your character interesting in the non-combat portion of the game.

I would pick between Fighter and Ranger (with archery feats) depending on whether you want your character to be combat-focused or a more well-rounded character. Either way, all feats would be spent on archery with a Longbow (mighty composite). All stat increases would go into dexterity (for accuracy).

There are various PRCs available, but as a level 6 character I wouldn't worry about PRCs. Just pick Fighter or Ranger and put all your levels in one class.

The Favored Enemy bonus can really add up for a Ranger, particularly if your GM favors a particular bad guy race (Humans, Orcs, Giants, Demons, etc.).

I think Weapon Spec. & Greater Weapon Spec. is a lot more beneficial in the long run. That is a constant 2 (or 4) more damage to ANY enemy, so long as you are using a specific bow. Ranger Favored Enemy is very situtational. If your DM doesn't use specific monsters very often, you waste an entire class feature.

I'd switch Weapon Focus and Precise Shot if the game starts at 1st level. The extra +1 is great when the other side is still closing, but it's mostly negated when your frontliners have engaged and you're soaking the -4 penalty for shooting into the melee.

I'd rather take PBS and Rapid Shot at level 1. Most archers I've seen hit pretty well and having two shots instead of one is a big boost.
