Yes, they are aberrations and in 3e at least all aberrations needed to eat, breath, and sleep.

I am sure an ecology of the beholder is in an old issue of Dragon Magazine.

They need the sleepy time to dream of planer domination.

I would say the beholder can sleep, yes. Imagine them just floating there with all their eyes closed. They would probably sleep after eating an adventurer.

I put together a visual aid.

The 5e MM is pretty good about stating when monsters don't need sleep. It doesn't say beholders don't (whereas it does say that the undead death tyrant does not), so I think it's safe to assume they do. As SirAntoine says, it's easy enough to picture them hovering in the air with their eyes all closed. Or maybe, as GameOgre says, they sleep with one eye open.

I'd say they need to rejuvenate or revitalize themselves from time to time.

What form that takes...I wouldn't know. Maybe after they mate or spawn?

Perhaps they indulge in a reverie like elves, but one filled with the beholder's favorite moments of inflicting terror, madness and mayhem on other, lesser beings.

I think it would be awesome to put a group of adventurers in the middle of a hive of beholders, all dreaming mad dreams, making scary noises and drooling in somnolent glee.
