Star Wars Special Edition vs. the Original (new insights!)

Kai Lord

Hero
I think its a great loss that we may never see another release of the original Star Wars trilogies on the highest possible medium. I know, you're shocked. But moving on I just watched the SW:SE in its entirety on my glorious THX certified dolby digital laserdisc for the first time in about five or six years.

I loved it! Some things I noticed:

1. In her hologram message to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia says, "years ago you served my father in the Clone War." I had always remembered Luke referring to the events as "the Clone Wars", plural, and found it interesting that Yoda referred to it in the singular at the end of AOTC. But from the beginning Leia called it the "Clone War" as well. Only a geek of the highest order would spend a microsecond thinking about such things, but there you go.

2. I had also mistakenly remembered Obi-Wan to tell Luke that when he first met Anakin, "he was the best starfighter pilot in the galaxy," which TPM stupidly contradicted by just having him some punk pod racer kid. But that isn't what Kenobi said. Luke says "you fought in the Clone Wars?" And Obi-Wan says, "yes I was once a Jedi, just like your father. He was the best starpilot in the galaxy. He was a cunning warrior, and a good friend."

So as long as Episode III showcases Anakin being the best pilot ever its all good.

3. The new sunset over the Jawa canyon is beautiful.

4. The Dewbacks don't look *quite* as cool as I remembered them, but look good nonetheless.

5. The landspeeder effects were fantastically cleaned up.

6. I like most of the new Mos Eisley shots.

7. Don't like the two new aliens in the cantina. Give me back my Wolfman close-up! :)

8. The Greedo scene is still indeed dorky, but its over pretty quickly. Just as big a problem as the new shot fired is how painfully repetitive the dialogue is with the new Jabba scene. When Lucas couldn't include Jabba, he moved the "has no time for those who drop their cargo at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser" and "even I get boarded sometimes" to the Greedo scene. Its awkward to hear Greedo say the line, then Han reply, then Jabba say the exact same line, to which Han gives the exact same reply, with the exact same inflection even (as opposed to him saying, "yeah Greedo mentioned dropping the shipment but as I told him I sometimes get boarded too.)

In full Sherlock Holmes mode, I popped in my old copy of the "SW: Behind the Magic" CD-ROM and watched the entire work print rough cut of the cantina sequence (the one with Han's girlfriend snuggled up to him!) Sure enough, when Greedo sits down with him neither one mentions dropping cargo or getting boarded. As I said, Lucas obviously filmed the extra line as an insert after cutting the Jabba sequence.

9. But I still like Jabba. Its just cool to see a new scene with a 35 year old Harrison Ford playing Han. And I even like the addition of Boba Fett. Kind of makes him a "Feyd" to Jabba's "Baron Harkonnen."

10. Another interesting thing I noticed, as Chewbacca, Peter Mayhew in the background boredly looks down at the ground at the *exact* moment Han steps off Jabba's tail. With the new footage it plays like Chewie looks down at Jabba's tail as if to say, "Holy crap, did Han just *step* on him!?" A totally sweet coincidence that plays beautifully. :) Check it out if you can.

11. The Falcon taking off while Stormtroopers blast away is awesome.

12. The new Alderaan explosion is cool.

13. Leia's 12-gauge autoshotgun is still goofy.

14. But above everything, the new Death Star battle just plain rocks. Even by today's standards the new effects are spectacular. Its like seeing it again through the eyes of a child. Awesome. I hope the DVD includes even more updates in the final attack (seriously.)

So all in all, the SE is definitely a more entertaining viewing experience than the original SW, even with the few steps back here and there. I eagerly await the DVD set for the first and third films (ESB:SE is still a lost cause), the Lucas commentaries, and hopefully "a few new surprises."

I'll admit when I saw the title of this thread and who was posting it, I braced myself for a bitter anti-Lucas rant. Imagine my surprise when I actually read the post. :D

On the subject of the special editions, another part I'd like to mention that I really liked was the scenes at the end of RotJ that showed Bespin, Tattoine, and Coruscant all celebrating the death of the Emperor. The Coruscant scene especially helped tie the classic trilogy to the prequels.

Plus, the crowd-surfing stormtrooper was a nice touch. :D

What have you done with our Kai Lord?!
Still here. Remember, "ESB:SE is still a lost cause," ;) but I stand by my appreciation of the good things in the SW:SE. Its not as important a film as the original (come on George, this is cinema history here!) but I do believe its more fun.

Just to post a comment abot the former thread. I was not insulting anyone in that thread. I was posting a comment towards the information Kai initially posted up which came from the link he posted.

The whole "blood sweat and tears" fanboy paragraph with the extremely jeuvenile "super final edition" crap is what I get so irritated at.

Discussing individual items in the updates to the Origional Trilogy is fine with me. I find it interesting and was surprised that I did not notice the visual screwups they did when adding scenes to ESB.

Acting though like George Lucas personally ruined your childhood, kicked your dog, and raped your little sister because he changed movies that fanboys suddenly think belong to them is just idiotic. I particularly get miffed by people who seem to act like "they" know better what does and does not fit into the Star Wars universe and condemn Lucas for changes that do not fit their "canon.

But enough of that. My apologies to anyone who thought I was attacking them with my comment. I only meant to aim it at the article that was origionally used to start the thread.

One minor nitpick. Han had to repeat what he said to Jabba. Sure he said the same thing to Greedo but then be blew his stomach out a monent later so Greedo never had a chance to pass it along to Jabba.

Your right though in that saying it the exact same way both times makes it obvious that the Greedo part was added just to make up for the Jabba part. A better solution would be something along the lines of Jabba starting to mention the dumped cargo and Han turning around and while looking Jabba straight in the eyes saying "yeah Greedo started to mention that too". That would have been perfect Han for him to say it with a slight menace to Jabba even with Fett and the other hired guns right there.

i love the original trilogy, even though i haven't seen it for close to a year (decided once i had the whole thing memorized, i should take a break for a while, and the new movies where hurting me to think about star wars). the special edition was a great idea, and for the most part is great. but two things that bother me, in ep. 4, the scene with greedo and han. i'm a picky person when it comes to how things look, and always bothers me when i can tell a computer is being used to change something, making look like a real person isn't there (how many clones of mr smith in reloaded?), or didn't move like that (han dodging blast). to me, that just didn't look very real.

second thing that bothers me about the spec. ed. is luke 'yelling' (lack of a better term) when he falls down the chasm in ep. 5. i don't think it sounds like luke, for one, and i'm also so used to him being silent on his big plummet to doom.

just my opinions

Now that I totally agree with. I've seen it too many times ver with fans. Right now the big controversies in "fandome" is the Battlestar Galactica remake mini/series. There are people who are actually pissed because it didn't live up to their expectations of what Battlestar Galactica is supposed to be.

My attitude - so what? So you liked a show that aired 25 years ago and was cancelled after 1 season. So now someone comes along and reinvents it for modern audiences and changes practically everyting. How are you entitled to a say in what gets made? The attitude that someone entertained you so they somehow now owe you something is absolutely ludicrous. Granted, they don't have to watch or like the new show, but to get personally offended and whine about it for months afterward is absolutely insane to me.

The issue with the original Star Wars is a slightly different issue to me, just because Lucas has changed the only versions of the originals without giving us the ability to purchase them as they were originally released. How could he possibly be ashamed of those movies?

Not that I think Star Wars fans should be kicking and screaming about this either. I just find it strange and a bit annoying.

That was beautiful.

That pretty well sums up my feelings as well on the issue. Although I have to admit that I would have preferred if the SE simply cleaned up/updated the special effects without making very noticebale changes to the original flow of the movies (i.e: Greedo shooting first, Luke's wussy scream etc.).
