Doing the GSL. Who?

Actual GSL. That's sorta why I'm asking, really. This whole GSL vs. 4E thing is really interesting and I'm trying to get a sense of what the relative inclination for one vs. the other is.

I don't think this question will have an answer for a while... When we find out if the D&D brand is a selling factor.

(I don't know if I think it is/will be with the current 3pp buying gamers... But if WoTC is successfull at increasing their market, it might have a good amount of value in order to tap into their market pressence with non hardcore gamers.)

It really is an issue of WotC hurting themselves with a restrictive GSL and what came before. Had the 3.x OGL been this restrictive less companies might have jumped on, but if they wanted to publish 3.x compatible material, they would have had to, because back then people were used to "one company, it's own rule system" people didn't look for AD&D 2nd edition comptatible books from anyone but TSR (and in the later years WotC) but the OGL changed that and everyone could see the logo. Now the logo isn't important, because people will just be looking to see that it is 4e compatible by opening it up, or looking on the back and reading the description that might mention "compatible with the newest edition of the most popular fantasy role playing game" or something along those lines or just an uncopywrited 4e.

People will be looking for that, and won't care if it bears WotC's official logo. Though if people that are circimventing the GSL produce unplaysted and unbalanced books (why I stopped buying the Mongoose Quintessential Books) they might come to again.

Still, that said, I LOVE 4th edition, I can't wait to get 4e stuff and with so little out from WotC you can bet I'll be snatching up the other publishers, but I don't care if it's GSL or not.

I'm glad to find even these publishers listed, all I knew about was Goodman Games. I also apologize if I got a bit off topic. Woot to Necromancer games too... though I wish they would publish their Tome (need more expansive monster books), with or without GSL.

Judge's Guild
Mayfair Games
Kenzer & Co

all published 2E (and in some cases 1E) compatable material. Kenzer had the Kingdoms of Kalamar 2E back in the day. They even had right on the cover, just like today, "For Use With Second Edition Dungeons and Dragons."

The thing is... what's to stop you guys from just doing what Kenzer is doing and making a 4E monster book?

Clark has mentioned on these forums that when he advised WotC that they might be forcing this issue (the copyright "end run") they took it as a threat. It was not well received. Clark has always had a good relationship with WotC and he is a cheerleader for "play nice." I think Clark would rather just walk away. That's my opinion. I think Clark's obviously torn in a lot of directions: love for D&D, love for the Necro fans, love and respect for WotC.

Likely doing some stuff for 4e. Clark's still working out the details. Tome 4e isn't gonna happen it looks like. Clark's said that in a few places already. NG isn't willing to give up or sacrifice the Tome line for the craptastic stuff that makes up the GSL.

Craptastic? Would you say that accurately summarizes Clark's opinion as well, or is that all you? (I am being curious here, not accusatory.)

I still maintain that the GSL was designed to be rejected. It's a sop.
