I was wondering today if lack of groups to play with is holding back the growth pace somewhat...older as in pre-3.0

Only if there was no other gaming I could find. I'd probably choose non-DnD games (Vampire or Hero or ...) over older editions as well. :)

Edit: Posted before the poll was up. I voted not play, although that's not 100% accurate. Like I said, if it's the only game in town ...

The growth pace of what?

of people playing retrogames or older editions if they could. i know in my case, i would love to get an ad&d game going but my group doesnt want to play tat edition. so i am outta luck. i was wondering if others are in a similar boat.

I'm currently playing in a True20 game and preparing to run a 3e game.

No one I know is terribly interested in 4th edition. I'm not really interested myself. I'm sure I could find a group playing 4e if I really wanted or maybe even convince my friends to give it a try if I run it. However I'm happy with 3rd edition and plan to keep playing it as my version of D&D.

When I'm not playing D&D I use GURPS 4th Edition or I write my own systems.

Edit: Hold on, are you talking 2nd ed and older? or is 3e included as an older system.

Because if you're talking 2nd edition or OD&D I'd be enthusiastic to play a session or two for old times sake and I'd be willing to play a campaign (though I'd prefer a 3e campaign).

I would only do it with the right people, because I'd play any game with the right people.

I'd have no trouble playing older editions with my current groups, but noone feels like DMing them, nor is anyone particularily keen on playing.

4e is fine, for us. When we want to play something else there are lots of other games around that are more enticing than dragging up older editions for the the nostalgia.

I said "play a game for old time's sake" but really, I'd have no problem playing a whole campaign with 2e or even earlier versions, IF the DM demonstrated to me that he was good at running that particular edition.

Some DMs are better at one than another; I find 3e suits me. I can barely play 4e, and I'd be very hesitant to run it; something about it jars me. I would go back to running 2e if my players asked me to. I had a good set of house rules, and I enjoyed the heck out of it, idiosyncracies and all.

I haven't stopped playing B/X yet. I also play 3.5 and have poked around with 4E.

The majority of my gaming in a year is B/X and 3.5, slightly more B/X than 3.5

So I voted "join a campaign"
