L4W Discussion Thread IV

I'm thinking of posting a new thread called "The Soap Box" where people can express their philosophies. Of course, the following is more of a rant than a philosophical expression:

Personally, I think it's poor form to go back and change something just because you released it, and it proved unbalanced. Just my opinion. You can't just 'errata'cate something you've allowed people to use (i.e.: Leather armor for Avengers, -5 for Cloak of Distortion). Errata should be used to correct typographical errors or clarify ambiguous rules, not change them because you think re-writing the game makes it better.

You published it.

It was clear.

Tough!

:p

Meh, I never like the Cloak of Distortion anyways (put too much strain on a DM to remember all of the -5's), but this update really sucks the life out of the item, lol.

I actually happen to really like what they did with the Righteous Rage of Tempus, as it pretty much duplicates the effect of a crit without stating that it IS a crit (thus preventing crit ability abuse) and then if you actually happen to score a crit, there's icing for that delicious cake of wonderful ^_^

If we don't go back and fix unbalanced things, we have to wait until editions change to fix them officially. Otherwise, they just get banned.

Its just like computer games: Patching to fix bugs and patching to balance are both valid ways to improve the game experience.

My opinion, of course.

Yeah, but they should release a near clean version, in order to don't have to pull new erratas every day. It's like NWN2, full of bugs, but the patches fix them.

I'm with stonegod. Fixing significantly unbalanced parts of the game is a necessary evil, if we want to implement them fairly - especially in a living world like L4W.

Of course, it would be nice if you could trade in your book for an updated version, but I guess the Character Builder fills that part.

I wish that you could do a proper rebuild in RPGA for a higher level character than gets nerf batted (like my aforementioned avenger)... nothing like losing two feats and your cloak's magical properties to piss you off

HotF has an awesome nerf.

I agree, this is a good nerf, it's still definitely better than the original multiclass feat in exchange for the higher stat requirement, but it's on the continuum now... Those who had faith that Wizards would fix this feat (KenHood I think?) are vindicated!

On another subject... when does Primal Power become fair game?

I think the insider update for it is today, which makes me think it's been a month...
