1/19 D&D Insider Update

Here’s a look at the basic features we’re working to add over the next few updates:

* Adding a classic character sheet option based on the original 4E character sheet.
* Adding a math sheet to the character sheets that shows the math involved in various aspects of the character.
* Redesign the equipment/store interface to be more user friendly.
* Implement a character sharing option so that others can view your character.
* Implement custom items into the equipment section.

I would like each of these. Good action items in my opinion.

This was, apparently, a complete bug-fix patch. Which is awesome. Fix what's broken without introducing new broken stuff.

Hopefully we'll see feature additions like "allow for additional feats" and "a freaking toggle for the already supported Inherent Bonuses" in the February update.

This is approaching a decent builder option. There are still some problems:

1. Paragon paths are hidden away under character backgrounds instead of in the class section where they would intuitively be.

2. The builder makes the paragon path choice for you if choose an essentials class, even if you chose the custom character option. Additionally, it doesn't actually notify you.

3. You can't take Eberron paragon paths in the home setting even though you can take Dark Sun and Forgotten Realms paths (and all Eberron specific feats oddly enough).

4. There is still no way to remove levels from a character.

5. There is no way to click inherent bonuses on and off. They are not available in any setting other than Dark Sun, and in Dark Sun you can't turn them off.

6. You can't give your players house-ruled bonus feats

7. All the powers that employ two weapons (like the scout's dual weapon attack) are broken. The second part of the attack/the bonuses to the offhand weapon do not appear.

8. Psionic classes with power points are still borked.

Fix those and my group is in business.

Sure there is. Manually adjust the XP field. The "level up" button will change to a "level down to X" button, where X is the appropriate level for the new XP total.

Hmm, good. It could be more explicit, and I shouldn't have to know, off hand, the experience associated with each level (say if I drop 3+ levels) but I am glad it is there. Thank you.

It's a long list of fixes, but at least one of them isn't really fixed.

"Essentials characters cannot choose lower level powers" -- I just confirmed, and I have an Essentials Thief who can only choose level 6 utility powers at level 6, even with "Show Additional Options" selected. That's a pretty big item, too.

Something I noticed right away, when I clicked on "Create Custom Character/Home Campaign" it skipped past the screen asking me what role I wanted to use and took me directly to the list of character classes.

Please go to this page, check if it's on the Known Issues list, and report it if it is absent. The CB coders probably don't read this thread, and having it in the system should at least get it on the known issues list.

I would give exps but it wont let me. I cant think of how many times I have explained just this to people.

I'd take it to mean that this is not the most intuitive/user friendly feature, then, and Needs Moar Usability.

Though, to me, that's kind of a separate issue from the whole "can I make a character with this?"

The answer is approaching yes. Still SOL for any Dark Sun character (due to Inherent Bonuses), and for house ruled characters (due to not being able to customize entries or add campaign elements), and for half of printed characters (due to bloated file sizes), but we're approaching basic bog-standard functionality.

The usability problems run a lot deeper and will require more effort to undo, and partially seem intentional (e.g: everything's an image so you can't copy-paste; it takes forever after every click because it tells WotC your every move), but it is exciting seeing them tackle the shop system havoc they have going on there. That's a positive sign.

The turd's got some polish. Still kinda rank, though.
