For crossbreeds, I tend to whenever assume the owlbearesque origin rather than the squick origin ... "Oh, those crazy wizards and their lab experiments!". Still, have to wonder about the popularity of the half-dragon template in 3e ... what ever happened to dragons being attracted to other dragons????

Interesting. I notice two monsters whose art I recognize, but the name of the monster they're supposed to be in that article isn't the same as the original source I remember. I'm guessing the artwork got reused for a different monster at some point (probably 4e since I wouldn't have the books).

I've explained half-dragons as draconic magic altering the eggs and fetuses by their mere proximity to the dragon -- the half-dragon giant frogs in the moat of Green Mountain aren't a factor of the dragon getting freaky, but of her essence corrupting the environment in her image.

The Roving Maukler [sic] and the Tooth Beast. The art I remember from the 3.5 Tome of Magic: Pact, Shadow, and Truename.

... And that's precisely how they're named there. (at myself). For whatever reason I thought that the first one was named a something something of Buer (which is the vestige it's associated with admittedly), and the other I thought I also remembered something different.

I'm gonna go make an omelet with this egg on my face now.
